It's just a marked-up version of the Tamron 18-270mm, which has been around for a while for Canon and Nikon:
Tamron AF18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD AF Lens AFB008C700 B&H

I hope that some sort of rebate ends up being launched once the lens comes out...

not that I'm in the market for this lens, but I hope the lens price does come down to around $599 when it's all said and done. It should be priced above the DA 18-135 for the reach it offers, but then again, it's not WR. No way is it worth $800.

It hasn't been advertised yet in Oz but if it's around $800 it will have very stiff competition from the new Sigma 18-250 Macro that will be available in Nov and can be
pre ordered for $525 with a 5 Year warranty

marked up in price or in performance version?

does it mean they might have the same image quality?

well anyway i hope pentax can come up again with a lens of their own that everyone here can be proud with.

since pentax is in for marked up versions, why make a marked up version of the sigma 17-50 f2.8 then call da* 17-50 2.8 hahaha

i think that would be awesome assuming that they have manage to make it correctly unlike the da* 16-50

Hmmmm... $729 at Henry's in a Sony, Nikon or Canon mount.

From photo zone....

In the image center, the lens delivers generally very good resolution at all tested focal lengths and apertures, reaching even excellent resolution at 18mm when stopped down.
The borders and corners are a different story, though. Throughout most of the zoom range the resolution is quite low here at large aperture settings. In the lower zoom range the sharpness can be increased here by stopping down. The best performance is shown at the shortest focal length again.
These might be the worst numbers i've ever seen for a lens. (I'm sure now that I've said that someone will point me to a worse one.) The barrel disortion is pretty significant as well as the handling of CA....

So, optically the lens isn't all that great. Its biggest advantage compared to the competition is not its optical performance, but its compact size.
I hope someone never gives me this lens as a present. And Pentax is adding this to their line up why? This makes the 18-135 look like the bargain of the century. Why didn't they license the much better 18-250. Or put out an 18-200 like Canon and Nikon, or Even the Sigma 18-200. I look at the numbers for all these lenses and shake my head... but the Tammy 18-270 is by far the worst. pentax is making me ill. An $800 lens who's only purpose would be to convince you you need a DA*60-250 and a 17-70,
