Wide as possible without distortion, and fast. In August, my first time to try, the first night I used my A 50mm 1.4. Nice and clear, fast, but not wide enough. My strategy was to point the lens at where the most activity occurred, 15 seconds exposure at iso 6400. The second night I used the kit lens 18-55 wide open. 15 seconds at high iso caught the momentary flash of the meteor, then the noise removed by a dark exposure.

I'd like to find a 15mm or 21 mm ltd for next year.

Sadly, here in western Oregon it's the 18-55WR we'd use nothing but clouds here.
Actually distortion is a personal choice; I'd happily use my Sigma 15mm f/2.8 fisheye to get more sky in the corners!

This from August, 6400 iso 15 secs. I saw this out of the corner of my eye but the 18mm caught it.

As wide as possible. Distortion or not, getting as much of the sky as you can in frame is very helpful.
