Smc takumar 55mm 1.8 lens asahi m42 pentax

Can anyone tell me something about the SMC TAKUMAR 55MM 1.8 LENS ASAHI M42 lens for Pentax K mount? I did a Google search and it seems to have a pretty good reputation. I just purchase one for $34.00 without having a Pentax camera to mount it on.
For info I am almost finish selling all my Canon gear and waiting for the Pentax 5 II to be released. This will be my first Pentax
I probably should have asked this question first, but it seemed like a good deal.

Do you have the K mount or the M42 screw mount? It sounds like you have the M42 mount, you'll need an adapter to use it on a K mount body. They made the 55mm f1.8 in M42 and K mounts. The K mounts said SMC Pentax on the name ring, the M42 had some variation of the Takumar name on them.

That technicality aside, every 55mm f1.8 Pentax produced was quite good, it should give you very nice results, just don't expect flare control and some other things to be on par with a modern lens.

I have the S-M-C Takumar 55mm f/1.8 which is one series earlier than the SMC. Here is the link to the lens review: SMC/S-M-C/Super-/Auto-/Takumar 55mm F1.8 Reviews - M42 Screwmount Normal Primes - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database I believe the optics are the same but the SMC version has a rubberized focus ring. Excellent lens, as noted above the Pentax 55mm's are generally very highly regarded. It will be a short telephoto on the k-5, excellent portrait lens.

You will need an M42 to K-mount adapter to make that work. The Pentax OEM version is considered the best, but good ones can be found elsewhere at much lower cost. Just search ebay for "Pentax M42 adapter".

Here is a link on how to use manual (K, M and M42) lenses on your new camera. https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-beginners-corner-q/110658-using-ma...x-dslrs-f.html

Thank you all for the information. I think after this I will do my research first. I am familiar with Canon lens, but Pentax seems to have a lot of different terms they use to describe the different lens. Again, thank you.

Shortly after you get the lens, while you're playing with it, you'll notice the Auto/Man switch has become stuck in Auto. You can skip all the usual steps and read this thread:

They do, although in general they are also consistent. At least they were in the past, not sure what Ricoh will do. Anyway it is easy to navigate the terms if you get the basics down and always insist on the full name of the lens. Maybe it's just me but I find Pentax really easy to understand. I'm totally confused by Sigma.
