..... or if it really is much better than the previous (dud) one.....
DxO have tested the older EX DG APO HSM, the EX DG APO Macro HSM II, and the EX DG APO OS HSM (eg on a Nikon D7000 - which resembles I think the K-5 for all intents and purposes).

In terms of the overal score, the II gets the prize, although the latest OS version scores a fraction better on resolution (but it depends on the focal length).

The Tamron 70-200 is also, of course, excellent - but locally the best price is about $725 grey with no local warranty, or about $950 non-grey. The Sigma II from DCW ships with full local warranty support, fwiw.

DxO tests at all focal lengths supported by the lens. They were just indicating that for the OS version, it was sharpest at 100mm, whereas the others were sharpest at 70mm.

The results for resolution (at the frame center) for all focal lengths including 200mm are under the 'Measurements' tab.

I don't own the Tamron but I have rented the Sigma HSM II and now own the OS version. I just participated in the October "Single In" challege here at PF last month and spent the whole month with the 70-200mm OS mounted to my K-r. I have to say, I believe it is the sharpest lens I own and the focus is blazing fast. CA is almost non-existent. I wanted it for shooting my kids playing hockey and the HSM II did a fine job of that when I'd rented it. I went back and forth over whether or not to buy a Tamron because they're a lot less money and I felt I could use it for things other than hockey because it was sharper and rendered colors better. In the end, I don't think I've compromised at all by buying the Sigma OS version. I now have both incredible sharpness and blazing fast AF.

I spent the month deliberately shooting outside the ice rink to see what happened when I strayed from the stereotypical uses for the Sigma 70-200mm lenses. I still believe (although I've never owned one) that the Tamron might be better for color/contrast and bokeh, but only slightly and contrast you can fix in post. If you're interested, here's my photo a day using the Sigma OS: PF Single In October Challenge
