I have both lenses. Started with the DA which I really liked, but I wanted the faster aperture of the FA.
The FA does have a little more purple fringing but I wouldn't call it a fringe-happy lens. It really only happens in very dark scenes where you've got a really bright light source in the frame, when shooting at large apertures. You generally don't want a bright light source dominating an otherwise-dark scene anyway, so for the most part it's pretty avoidable.
I think the DA's better handling of fringing is likely due to newer lens coatings.
Which reminds me, I still need to sell the DA...
