I have the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8-4.5 OS HSM, and I also have the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. I like both, but I love the Tamron. It is my most used lens.

Several forum users have checked in - here for Sigma (several lenses to choose from) and here for the Tamron!

I also used the f/2.8-4.5 Sigma for a while; the 52mm filter size of the DA18-55 WR was more compatible with other lenses in my bag so I went back to it. Fun to have a zoom lens that doesn't change size, and the silent focus was nice too.

I have the Tamron and quite like it. It is a nice step up from the kit lens. I use the f2.8 a lot and it is quite sharp. Focus seems pretty quick and accurate.

I had the older Sigma non-macro version. I liked the IQ but sold it for focal length reasons.

I had the Tamron 17-50 for a Canon 20D. Good IQ but noisy focus..if you are shooting at a quiet event it can be embarrassing. I also found that it hunted a bit, but that may be attributable to the older camera. For bang for the buck, it's hard to beat. I tried a friend's Sigma 17-50 HSM on my K5 and loved it, but it is also a bit more expensive. Tamron also has a pretty good warranty with their products (I think 6 years?) so that's another plus.

The Tamron 17-50 likely had noisy focus on Canon because it had its own focus motor. On Pentax the body is doing the focusing rather than the lens, and while it's not silent, I definitely have other lenses that focus more loudly.

I'll second the other opinions's a good lens. If you look at the test charts out there it's supposed to be sharper than the assorted Sigma 18-50 versions, but not quite as sharp in the corners as the new Sigma 17-50.

My copy did require a -5 AF fine adjustment but otherwise has been quite good.
