Pentax K 200/f2.5 vs DA 200/f.28?

Looking for a fast 200.

Anyone own or tried both the K 200/f2.5 and the DA 200/f2.8?

What are your impressions? I've read the reviews. Obviously you get AF with the DA, and weather sealing and SDM.
To me the benefits of the 2.5 are its extra aperture, and half the price. Anything else?

How do people find manual focus in the K5? I really have relied on autofocus almost all the time. Thanks.

I have the K300/4 and from other forum members comments the 200/2.5has similar behaviour, nice and sharp and all but will exhibit lateral CA in the out of focus areas, much more than newer lenses will.

The DA200 lens will break down within 10 years and require a major repair.
The K200 is already 37 years old & works fine and will last forever.

Guess which of the two I own.

Do you know what day in ten years it will break down?

How do you find your 37 year old 2.5 for manual focussing?

I only shoot film with old Pentax MF capable bodies. These cameras have nice big bright viewfinders with focusing screens designed for critical manual focusing. The K200/2.5 and all other primes from that period are easy to focus and a joy to use.

For you it depends on your MF skills and the DSLR you are using, since I donít do AF or digital Iím probably not the best person to ask. Iíve also been shooting since the mid 1970ís so Iíve had a lot of MF practice.

PS I was kidding about the DA200 breaking down in 10 years, it will probably be closer to 5!

Look at the FA*200/2.8. I've had one for a decade or so and its a stellar piece of glass.

I can't compare with the K200/2.5. One nice feature of the DA* 200/2.8 (and the FA* 200/2.8) is the short minimum focus distance. Very handy for closeups of larger insects (butterflies), hummingbirds, etc. The DA* weighs a bit less than the K, and the FA* is lighter still (I suppose the DA*'s extra weight has to do with the weather sealing and the SDM). I had trouble with manual focus on fast lenses until I upgraded my focusing screen (Canon S-type).

You can certainly get the DA* to show purple fringe in some cases. But I'd hazard a guess that CA is much better controlled than with the K.

I recently took my DA* 200 and K10D canoeing in a salt marsh. After the trip I gave the kit a good rinse under the faucet, just in case.
