Sigma 50-500 versions

I'm up short on the long tele end, and considering the Sigma Bigma, used mainly.

I tried to look through old posts, but did not find an answer complete enough, so here goes:

Are there many different versions?
The latest one has HSM and OS with apertures f4.5-6.3. Sigma Lens: Zooms - Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM APO - SLRgear.com!
I saw some old reviews of the EX-labeled one (HSM, non OS) with f4-6.3. here Sigma Lens: Zooms - Sigma 50-500mm f/4-6.3 EX DG HSM APO (Tested) - SLRgear.com!

Are they all EX-build? Or was only the f4-6.3 marked EX? Which were available in K-mount?

Hi there

I have the previous Bigma (non-OS, non-HSM) and I believe it is marked EX as well. Mine is a good lens and I got it for a great price used.

Regards

Is your lens marked f4 or f4.5?

I think all versions have been available in K-mount. From what I've seen, they are all "EX-build" but Sigma changed what type of lenses they designate EX from lenses with exotic elements (like SLD glass) to ones that are a constant max aperture.

Optically, the DG EX and OS/HSM versions are pretty much identical, but the addition of OS (optical stabilization) reduces the widest effective aperture from f4 to f4.5. Same thing happened with the 150-500mm when it was updated with OS...

Unless I would want OS (not really) or HSM (screwdrive is just fine with me) I would gain some speed on the short end (no need either).
So any version would be OK then, unless HSM AF speed is much faster? Doubt that too.
