If you take a look in PPG, you'll notice that some of the shots were taken with this very lens. To be accepted into the PPG not only says something about the equipment being used--it also says something about the photographer and what he or she can do with the equipment he or she has.

Hmmm, I noticed that B&H will soon have the new kit lens.
Pentax | SMCP-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II Autofocus Lens | 21717
For the price of the thing, I would hope they made an improvement. Does anyone with a K200D have any images to share? Curious.

I agree with the most things said in this thread. However, i recently sold my 16-45/f4 and now i´m stucked with the 18-55 again. It´s been a while since I used it so i thought i´d try it this weekend. And i did. One thing i noticed was that the 18-55 suffer from MAJOR vinjeting when used with a polarisationfilter. It also suffers from heavy distorsion at 18 mm. It almost ruined my easterphotos taken high up in the swedish mountains. Dont have any of them here now, i´m on work, but I´ll post some when i get back.

Of course, it might be a poor photographer rather than a poor lens

In my experience with my own kit lens I've found it best to avoid the extreme ends of this zoom. If I keep it between 22mm to 50mm performance is much better. 18mm is useful if you want vignetting and distortions in your photo, which sometimes is ok.

Kit lens doesn't mind a bit of light and clouds

Allright, here are some shots i took during the easter holidays.

All of those are at 18mm.

Now, it can of course produce good images aswell, such as this:

18mm, ISO200 f/11

I´m SO addicted to wideangle and i really miss the quality of the 16-45/f4. I guess I´ll have to save up to the DA 12-24.

here's my take on it, but before: let's not be mean, please. okay, i agree, one of the best kit lenses overall on the market, if not the best, but the others are not bad either. the nikon feels like shit, yeah, but opticaly it can outperform the pentax in some respects, and the canon... okay, i'll be quiet about it . but really, i think nice pictures can be taken with any kit lens, by the right photographer.

with that out of the way, here are a few of my snaps with it. ofcourse i haven't even scratched the surface of what this lens can do (a clear case of the lens being better than the photographer )

So does the Pentax kit...

I never liked it, for the same reason. Maybe I got a bad one, but it always had issues with AF
at either end of the focal range, and I was just not impressed with the build quality. Now
that I have the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 Macro as a walkaround, it really puts the cheap kit lens in
it's place. The trash. Maybe I'm being the lone dissenter here, but even the crappy Minolta
plastic zoom I have on my Maxxum works better. i wouldn't use one again if it was given to
me.
