Da15 ltd purple lens flare?

First is an edge crop the other 2 are centre crops. Do I attribute this flare to a greasy lens or could it be something more serious?

Even the DA 15 can flare under the right conditions!
Did you have the hood extended for this shot?

Thinking back I do not remember but I always extend the hood so unless it was pushed back in by accident I will say yes it was extended.

Think you must have had something on the lens.

That looks like a smudge, caused by extending the hood and accidentally brushing the front element. Course, that's just a theory.

Or as has already been pointed out maybe the circumstances were just right for flare. I have taken many shots towards the sun with this lens and nothing like this has occurred before. I'll just have to give it a wipe with some lens fluid and hope that does the trick.

i would love to see the full frame of each shot,

to me it must be that the sun is directly in the frame, in which case you are really at the mercy of the lens and sensor,

While the DA 15 is very flare resistant, it can and does flare on occasion. A smudge on the lens could cause that as can a filter. If the sun hits a lens at just the right angle, flare is going to happen no matter how well coated or designed the lens is. I do a lot of car shows. They are always in the daytime and when the golden hour comes, everybody is on the way home. There is light reflecting from every angle. The DA 15 stopped down is the best lens I have ever used for cars but flare still happens.

The sun is not in the frame in any of these images. Just outside. It is late autumn here so the sun is quite low in the sky.

No filter. I got tired of unscrewing it every time I removed the lens cap.

This a distinct possibility. Or fiddling with the annoying screw on filter.

Sensible comment I'll try a cap from another lens first just to make sure the hood doesn't get in the way before getting one.

That lens is so sweet and nimble, I would stick to using it the way it was meant to be used, with the proper hood and proper cap.
