SDM

I picked up both the DA* 16-50 and 50-135 on the black Friday deal at B&H.Got them this afternoon and unboxed them. Put them on the K-5 to test them and the 50-135 was amazing. I've been shooting with the DA 18-135 and thought that it was pretty decent, different class. Now the best part. The DA* 16-50 wouldn't focus at all. I tried manual and AF...... Nothing. I finally looked at the distance scale and it stayed at infinity whatever I tried. I will send it back and try another one. I am planning ta trip to NW coast of Washington and wanted an opportunity to do some serious storm photography, Hope I get the new lens back before the trip. Glad it happened before I was on the road.

To state the obvious, was the switch on the lens set to AF?

Sorry to hear about the failure out of the box of the 16-50. Yes, the 50-135 is supposed to be brilliant optically. I have kept my 18-135 because its a great walk-around in the bad weather lens that does not require changing in-range. Still, optically there are better (and more expensive) lenses out there. Hope the 2nd 16-50 works for you. Good luck.

Tried with camera and lens set to manual or AF . Like I said the 50-135 worked fine.

I figured. Thought there may have been a chance the 16-50 came out of the box set to mf.

Awww sorry to hear that Rodin, I just received my DA* 16-50 f2.8 yesterday from B&H's Black Friday deal and it works just fine, it could've been me that got your copy and you got mine, but looks like I was in the lucky end of the part. Hope all goes well with your new copy once you return that one. I am loving mine so far and hope you'll see the same and that the replacement is worth the wait.

LeDave,
I got the DA* 50-135MM F2.8 also so I am having fun with it right now. B&H is super busy so they haven't got back to me yet about the return. As long as I get a good one before my brother in-laws big 65 party at the end of December I will be OK Anyway I have most of the DA Ltd's to use until then .
Good Shooting!

I also got the 50-135, and I agree that while the 18-135 is good, the 50-135 is in another league.
