Photography Monthly Lens Test

All, just to let you know, that Photography monthly have done tests on various Pentax lenses.

Namely the following:-

Pentax SMC-DA* 16-50mm F2.8 ED AL (IF) SDM
Pentax SMC-DA* 50-135mm F2.8 ED AL (IF) SDM
Pentax FA 77mm F1.8 Limited
Pentax SMC-DA 50-200mm F4-5.6
Pentax SMC-DA 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 ED AL (IF)
Pentax SMC 100mm F2.8 DFA Macro

Ignoring the overall rating and concentrating on the performance rating (what matters) they got the following (5 stars max)

16-50 - 4 stars
50-135 - 5 stars
77mm - 5 stars
50-200 - 3 stars
18-250 - 3 stars
100mm - 4 stars

I would say not bad.

Understandable that the 77 got max, but nice to have the 50-135 to get the same. Also, I think it is usual that the long range zooms (ie more than 3x) got only 3 stars, but as they say, for pro's they are not what they want, but as a general purpose lens are good.

Finally, the most interesting thing that they say, is that CA is better controlled on the majority of the lenses when you stop down, the 100mm is better when you open up.

Personally I think the reviews are very good and constructive (ie independent)

This is purely my take on lens reviews and camera reviews in general: ______.

Specifications are the only thing technical I make note of.

I'd rather see photos of different varieties; day, indoor, low light, night, etc. in real world circumstances. This can easily be done in photo databases such as PBase, flikr, etc. by searching using lens or camera model. A picture speaks a thousand words. Computer review sites do the same, making charts and graphs using numbers to rate product that in real world use honestly won't make a significant difference.

Metalfab, I know what you mean, But fortunately PM is one of the UK mags that can be trusted (they are not CaNikon biased) and a darn site better than some of the so called web review sites (as was proven in another thread), so I read their reviews with interest. In fact they liked my Sigma 170-500m as being an excellent lens for the price. If you can get hold of a copy of the March edition in Canada, it might be worth a look. In fact, at the moment the Editor is using the GX-10 for 12 months and he likes it. (Althoug in the same mag he rates the D3 as the best Camera of the dacade - which is currently understandable.......)

Me? I like the idea that they really rate the 50-135 as it is on my radar as a purchase.

Thanks for the tip, I'll have to look out for that magazine. As for you getting the 50-135 I am envious

The K20d also fared pretty well though they said ISO 6400 and 3200 were both unacceptable. And Jpeg colour accuracy was also below the pack at all ISOs.. :-(

I love that magazine; great format and volumous. Expensive for us inthe US, but I'll definitely have to pick that one up. Thanx for the FYI.

I have not seen their full test of the K20D yet, as none of the UK mags have done a full test. Was this on their website? I might have to have a look

Is there any way to sign up for the "Electronic edition subscription" of Photography Monthly in the U.S.? I tried subscribing on their website but it seems to be restricted to GB. (Hey, the U.S. is an ex-colony, too!) Amazon will sign me up for the print edition here for $US 133 per year, but I don't see any way to get the electronic version.
