Hmm. I bet the OP made his decision a couple of years ago, but I agree about the Pentax.
Haha, always a chuckle to see epically old threads revived with lengthy, well thought out and serious responses! (and the ensuing pokes...)

I arrived at this thread via Google while searching for reviews of the Pentax 17-70mm. Just because the original poster is no longer in need of the information doesn't mean that future visitors won't be. Virtual is just that and such questions are eternal :-)

Just to throw a wrinkle in this...

I'm going through this right now. I have the K10D and the kit lens. I have an A 50 1.7. I'm trying to decide between the two OP lenses (and the Sigma 17-70). The wrinkle I'm thinking about is what would swapping for a K-x and buying the 17-70 do? I'd probably get another stop or two from the ISO performance. That would be the best of both worlds, right?

My use would be indoor kid shots. Wanna be able to catch some fast action!!!

Accidentally won an Ebay auction for $185 on the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5. Guess that settles my personal argument.

Nice price! I decided on the Pentax 17-70/4 a few months after it came out and haven't regretted my decision. It's small as a zoom lens in that range goes, and I don't mind the little distortion that I see on the wide end. It's amazing what I can now do with the 17-70/4 on the Kx. And I thought my K100DS was good!
