Not necessarily. Like everything in life, using a ring flash has good and bad points. It all depends on the situation and on what you'd like the photo to look like.

One of the characteristics of light from a ring flash is that it falls off pretty quickly. This makes the background (since they are typically far away) appear dark. Another is that the light is even (some ring flashes allow you to turn off the flash tubes individually) and thus the object appears to be flat (shadowless).

I find myself using ring flash much less for macro since I acquired a copy of Sunpak 120J (similar to Quantum Qflash T2 but much more portable). I now use the 120J with a QF62BG Bare Bulb Light Enhancing Reflector in most macro shooting.

Once in a while I use the Sunpak DX12-R (along with off-camera flashes) for portrait. The shadow around the portrait creates a subtle "3-D" effect.

Actually for insects I hated the results of the ring flash I hardly ever use mine now I use a homemade soft box and much prefer the results I get with it.
