A50/1.2 cheap! But there is a problem...

So I scored an A50/1.2 (YES,f/1.2, not f/2!) for the equivalent of 80USD from a shop near home. Crystal clear optically, but cosmetically UG condition.
One issue - the contacts appear to be malfunctioning - I'm getting F-- on the screen in AV mode, and I'm forced to use the green button in M mode with manual aperture setting. Can this be fixed easily?

Try cleaning the contacts on the lens & camera body with a little bit of alcohol or naptha. They may be gunked up, not allowing communication with the camera.

Make sure the contacts are clean. If cosmetically the lens is ugly, the contacts may be gunky.

Maybe a stupid question on my part, but are you absolutely sure it's an "A" lens? The way you describe the function sounds more like an older K50/1.2- not that that would be a bad score either, at that price!

Is the aperture ring locked into the A position? if not it will not behave like an A lens.

The A contact is spring loaded so you can mount the lens. Once it's on the camera, it sticks out to touch the slightly recessed contact on the camera mount. The contact should move when the aperture ring goes in or out of the A position. Check this movement if cleaning the contacts doesn't work. The contact is probably constructed like the A50/1.7, and you can see my photos of that in the Articles section under Repair. The small parts are a little fussy to get into the right position but with some patience, not that hard.

On a side note--- I read the articles on taking lenses apart and fixing them... I tried to repair a second A series 50mm f 1.7 that I used to have...

Things didn't work out too well, The directions were good but my lens was no more. I would rather suggest sending your lens off to some professional if it needs work. It would be worth the money if it needs repairing.

Get it cleaned up and fixed all in one swoop.

Congrats. Would you care shooting in M mode?
It's a real bargain for this price.

In normal A lens, when position is set at "A", the tiny contact ball will come out.
When position is set at F numbers, the tiny contact ball will goes in and hence DSLR shows "F--".
If you set at "A" and the tiny contact ball did not come out, then something is wrong with the mechanical parts.

Oh absolutely.. it says SMC Pentax A 50 1:1.2 right in front, and it has the "A" setting on the aperture ring.
Will check the contacts and update - it is definitely a lens issue, as my other "A" lenses work just fine.

Sorry to ask such a silly question. I just happened to be using my Cosina 55/1.2 last night and that's exactly how mine displays, so I thought it was worth mentioning. Awesome find! And in this economy, pawn shops are springing up all over, maybe I need to do a little checking myself! Well good luck, hope you get it into good working order.

^Just a small, happy update. Got it fixed, and as MegaPower said, the small contact ball wasn't coming out. The person I bought it from repaired it for no extra charge, and I can now control the aperture from the body itself.
