My K5 shutter doesn't work with K mount M 50mm 1.7

I just found an SMC M K mount 50mm 1.7. I put it on manual and the shutter won't fire any ideas before I take it back.

This is probably the most-frequently asked question on these forums.

you have to allow your camera to work with manual lenses!
Go to menu/C4/27 and set it to "2" (=allow).
Then it should work.

on custom menu 6.38 "use aperture ring" make sure you select "permit".

This once again comes to the inexplicable reason for having that factory set to not permitted. I don't care if there was a reason, it just seems like that there as a 'did you read the manual' exercise by Pentax.

also, if you put the AF interuptor on AF instead of M, it will only take the shot when the subject is in focus.

I think the assumption was that most users would not use old glass and if the camera couldn't detect a lens, it shouldn't fire the shutter. And being Pentax, once they made the decision, they will stick with it to the bitter end. The assumption appears to be supported by PF stats - the bulk of pictures on PF were taken with kit lenses (or does the lack of EXIF info cause old glass to drop out?)

Not without that setting set to "permitted".

This fits my conspiracy theory that Pentax doesn't want us to use old lenses. So Pentax management has allowed this to be a menu option for now .... but who knows in the future ....

They've allowed it as a menu option forever, and they continue to use the K-mount. It is just a menu option that needs to be set once and forgotten. The default setting DOES make sense as the vast majority of users are using modern lenses (that don't even have aperture rings) and having that as a "safety" makes sense. And it DOES take a more sophisticated user to use the less-sophisticated lenses (ironically) -- is it too much to ask they spend 5 minutes learning the proper settings on how it works? I mean, if the setting were not needed, then we'd just be getting more "why doesn't it set the aperture for me on this old lens?", "Why doesn't Av mode work right?", etc etc

That thought has crossed my mind but I think it's deeper than that and it's involved in some Pentax Kungfu or ninja something. Who knows? Now, if they really did decide to not support old lenses I think that would both be news and also not buried deep in a custom menu somewhere. No, it's most likely just some quirky Japanese logic.

I don't think it's so much "doesn't want us to" as "assumes we will not" - and it's a valid assumption, supported by the numbers.

That said, on the K-01/K-30, with Manual+AutoISO = TAv (sort of), there does seem to be a hint of "You want manual? Then set EVERYTHING to manual, dammit!"
