Decent zoom lens for under 200 bucks?

I have a Pentax K100D camera and currently using an old zoom lens on it. But the autofocus bug has bitten me and I am starting to look into purchasing an autofocus lens for this camera.

Can a decent zoom be found for my price range? Any info or links would be appreciated.

Thank you.

It would help if you mentioned the focal length range you're looking for

except it is not autofocus, a really good 70-210 is the Series 1 F3.5 wieighs a ton, but fast, easy to focus and zoom with a single ring.

you won't get anything of that speed and optical quality for under 1000 in autofocus.

What focal range do you need? Are you using zoom in the correct way here? Zoom just means the focal length can be adjusted, do you want a telephoto zoom, a normal zoom, a wide angle zoom?

The DA 50-200 is a damn good deal for $199 - Nice colors, good bokeh, sharp images. You'll like it. It's a good weight, includes hood, 52mm threads.. Go for it.

Right now, I"m using my vintage 1984 Soligor 75-250 zoom lens on it.

I am looking for something around that "power" (you'll have to excuse my ignorance, since I don't know all the correct wordage stuff).

Just looking for a good, solid, autofocus lens in that "power" area.

Thanks a bunch.

The Tamron 70-300 LD Di is in that price range, isn't too heavy, and other than a bit of purple fringing in high contrast scenes, it is a darn nice lens for the price. I paid $169 for mine about a year ago.

Here are a few samples for you..

There is also the Sigma 70-300. Non-APO for about $140, APO for around $200. Comparable in IQ to the Tamron, but the APO version seems to handle the fringing better.

Yup, My vote would go to the Sigma APO closely followed by the Tamron. Both great choices at a very reasonable price range. Don't go cheap and get the older Sigma! It will not be worth the few dollars you save. Another excellent choice is the older Pentax SMC F 70-210 f4-5.6. Very nice lens that is sharp with good colour qualities. The Sig/Tam lenses have a 1:2 macro which is a great bonus and they are longer, but I liked the Pentax for the picture quality best. Now if you can find one in good shape...
