Sigma 30 or Pentax 28

I see B&H extended the time 1 more day for the Sigma 30 mm f 1.4. Which would be better F28 mm f/2.8, FA 28 mm f/2.8, or the Sigma 30 mm f/1.4? I am still chewing on it------------------------------ chew, chew, chew.

What do u think? I already have 1 vote for the Sigma.

Thanks.

I'd say go for the Sigma, even through it's a DC lens the IQ probably owns the older Pentax glass.

As lovely as the 28/2.8 lenses are, I'd go for the Sigma 30/1.4 too, as I hear it's AWESOME.

Some thoughts on the side of the older Pentax glass-- they are full frame, much smaller in size/weight than the Sigma. Of course, they are also much slower. Depends on your needs. The FA/F 28mm lenses are ticking up in used prices, though, so although the Sigma costs more (brand-new), they are at least closer in price to not make that much of a difference in that area. Although you might still be able to pick up a FA 28 or F 28 for less than $250.

Compare:
Sigma 30mm
Filter Thread: 62mm
Weight: 430g

FA 28mm
Filter Thread: 49mm
Weight: 185g

F 28mm

Weight: 180g

The FA28 is a nice lens. I had the F28, but I like the FA28 better (although it appears a number of people have had bad copies, and make quite a point of it in the reviews here).

I generally don't like Sigma glass as much, and it tends significantly under-perform within the first stop, if not more. And I don't even like Sigma rendering as much.

Despite all this, it seems hard to recommend an f/2.8 lens over a 1.4. If you're not going for the DA35/2.4, then I think the Sigma would be the better choice. It's certainly a lot cheaper than the new 35/1.4!

However, I will backup seventysixersfan, in saying that despite having the FA31, I still use the FA28 sometimes when I want a light, small, relatively inexpensive lens to take along on a bike ride or something.

I've had both the FA28/2.8 and the Sigma 30/1.4. Both had good IQ, but I found the Sigma to be better. I like small lenses a lot, but the 1.4 is worth the size and weight in my book.

Decision Made

I just ordered the Sigma 30 mm f/1.4 after much thinking, investigating, and informative input from my Pentax friends here. I am now done for the year buying any lenses.

Thanks and Merry Christmas/ Happy Holidays to All !!!!

I wouldn't be so quick to say that. The Sigma gets it on speed. I am not so sure on IQ and size especially from a good copy. I tend to like the F 28 better than the FA 28. The Sigma 30/1.4 is a nice lens though.
