I managed to source a K10D from a mate, with FW 1.20. Following the instructions on page 1 of this thread I could not enter the debug menu.
I looked for a link to FW 1.30, but only found 1.31, which was the last version I think. Installed it and still could not enter debug with either the modset file or djseeram's shortcut above.
Is there a way I can get FW 1.30 and install it once 1.31 is already on the camera, or am I basically stuffed?

Yes, you should be able to downgrade the FW to any level and flash it back to the current version after the modification is complete..

Downgrading a firmware version is normally not possible.
An older version will be rejected by the camera.

The only way to revert to an older version is to fool the camera into believing that the older version is a new version. This can be done by patching the older version.

I know that there were such patched versions around for the K10D.

Have you tried the solution shown here: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-dslr-discussion/128474-need-k10d-f...rs-1-30-a.html

I have k10 with v1.0. Appreciate your feed back on whether the recommended process works, before I upgrade to v3.1.

Thanks.

Sorry, I meant to link to only this post. I have not tried it myself, but it seems to address the concern:

No need for 1.30. Do the following with 1.31:

In the root directory of your memory card create or copy a text file named

MODSET.TXT

with only one line in it:

[OPEN_DEBUG_MENU]

After inserting card back to the camera, to enable debug mode do the following:

1. Switch camera off.
2. Open card door and leave it open.
3. Switch camera on -- debug menu shows up.
4. Close card door.
5. Left/right to enable debug mode.
6. Press OK to confirm.
7. Go to Set-Up menu, go to the end and Set-up will change to TEST MODE menu, AF TEST option is there with Focus Corr inside.

To disable debug mode:

1. Switch camera off.
2. Open card door and leave it open.
3. Switch camera on -- debug menu shows up.
4. Close card door.
5. Left/right to disable debug mode.
6. Press OK.

Note: you can permanently leave MODSET.TXT file on your card.

No luck. I have tried the above, repeatedly and with numerous re-edits of the MODSET.txt file, and I can conform the findings of others in the thread linked in post #154 above; it does not work with version 1.31 of the K10D firmware. When I power on, with the SD card door open and the MODSET.txt file in the root of the SD card, the camera LCD flickers briefly and that's it.

The only thing I can think of is that I am attempting this on a Mac using a basic third party text editor called Notepad (by Kupon.BG). Does anyone think it would be worth trying again on a Windows computer?

Are there any other bright ideas out there?

When is a text file not a text file? I doubt there's anything to be achieved by trying a Windows machine. I don't know Notepad, but you might confirm if it has a "save as plain text" option, just in case there's any stray formatting data in the default option.

For instance, on different platforms line endings are represented differently.

A "line feed" (ASCII code 10) or a "carriage return" (ASCII code 13), or both can be used to represent the end of the line.

The camera could potentially be confused by the wrong kind of encoding.

You'd hope the camera OS would be able to cope with that one, but you never know. My question wasn't really a question, as I guess you know, but merely an opening to a discussion on the differences that may exist in "plain text" files, although ensuring your software can save some form of plain text is the starting point.

Have you tried tethering software?

I understand PKTether can put a connected camera into debug mode as well.

Note: for K10D version 1.31 firmware users only.

Could you try this modset file I created using a windows machine.

Unzip then copy the MODSET file to your SD card.

How to deactivate SDM and allow for screw drive autofocus with DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 - Le site des amateurs de PENTAX

I post in page 1 the instructions, but I put a link to my websiute, so it is easier to read page older than page 1

Also, the instructions for 50-135mm
How to deactivate SDM and allow for screw drive autofocus with DA* 50-135mm f/2.8 - Le site des amateurs de PENTAX
this is the part that confuses me:

Then change the code "C0" by "80" in the colonn 03,for the following lines
-* 0020
-* 0060
-* 00A0
-* 00E0
-* 0120
-* 0160
-* 01A0
-* 01E0
-* 0220
-* 0260
-* 02A0
-* 02E0
-* 0320
-* 0360
-* 03A0
-* 03E0

what should the modified line look like after you change C0 by 80?
800020 for example on the first line?

thanks

randy
