Ah - but if only I had not given up I'd be about $100 richer. I bought a K100D and found even when I got into debug mode I was unable to get the lens rom file. Why? Because no one mentioned that you have to press MENU after you see the debug screen that I posted. Once you do that - the magic happens. Sigh. I will be compiling this info. Thanks to those who went before. Eventually I will have something worth publishing and then we can try to update it as we learn from additional successes. BTW I have not done any conversions - just backed up a file. I assume the rest of the process is easy once you have established the ability to talk to the lens.

1. Create a file named modeset.459 containing the following commands, and put it on the root directory (not in any folder) of an SD card:
[DEBUG_MODE EN]
[OPEN_DEBUG_MODE]
2. With the battery door open, and whilst holding down the AE-L and INFO buttons, turn the camera on.
3. Let go of AE-L and INFO straightaway the camera powers up, and then immediately press MENU, MENU, INFO in quick succession.
If you are successful, you should see a menu consisting of entries in white block capitals on a black background. The first menu item is DEBUG MODE. You have to be pretty quick with the button presses, so if it doesn't work, switch off and try steps 2 and 3 again.
These are pretty much the same instructions as for a K100D non-super, but the non-super does not require a modset.459 file on the SD card.
Crucial missing info. When you reach that debug screen you have to hit "MENU" once to get to the menu screen with the lens rom commands.
Sigh... if only I knew before buying a K100D.
