Using Modern DSLRs

Efforts by user Shodan have resulted in the ability to enter the extended debug menu on modern DSLRs such as the K-30, K-5 (II), and K-3.

It seems that it will no longer be necessary to get hold of older models in order to read/write the lens data.

I thought PKtether took care of this. What's the difference?

But if all you're doing is changing over to screw drive from SDM it doesn't matter right?

I may have missed it earlier in the thread, but is screwdrive faster on the DA*50-135. My SDM motor works fine, no concerns there, but the focus speed is just so bloody slow on all SDM lenses I own compared to screw drive. its caused me to miss shots

Some have said it is a bit faster. Others have not noticed a difference. So I guess its all about perception?

Please see Pjm1 post for the "correct" way to deactive SDM and convert to screw drive with a K-5

Attempting SDM to screwdrive procedure for K-5 DA*16-50 using Pktether.......results to follow.......

No Joy. I can enter the TEST MODE on the C menu, but I cannot get into the De Bug Mode via the modset.474 file using the [OPEN_DEBUG_MENU] command. Looks like its off to Henry's for them to send out for repair.

You need an earlier camera body. I used a K10D borrowed from a friend.
I don't think anyone has sorted out how to do it with a K-5 *yet*.

Maybe not.

Try entering the debug menu as described in the the "Firmware Hacking" thread. This latest way of entering the debug menu may get you to a functional version of the required submenu.

My sister has a K100D. I wonder if that camera would work?

The K100D even has a built-in editor.

After saving the original lens data, you could edit the data by using the K100D. No need to use Notepad+ or similar.
