Thanks pjm1, followed your instructions and got the 16-50mm to work again. Might have to do it to the 50-135mm when it dies. =)

Guys please help me hack my 16-50 and 50-135 lenses. The SDM never went out on either one, but I somehow managed to break an SDM contact off the mount of each one. I have tried the hack with a K7, my K5,Kx and my K-01 but I get "PC VENDOR' instead of full DEBUG MODE. So I bought a K100d off KEH because I read in earlier posts that it was easier to hack with that model.
I'm trying to hack the 16-50 first. I managed to get in full DEBUG MODE and I copied the lens EEPROM from K100D and started editing with Apple Text Editor within the SD Card (didn't download it to iMac but opened it with Text Edit) I managed to change the values from line "0000" to lines "04F0" from "C0" to "80" but I don't know if I should do the same for lines "5000" through "07F0". All the values in those lines say "FF".

Another thing I don't get is the quote posted below. Do i have to write additional values within the camera after I'm done with the steps above? Thank you guys in advance!

Using the DSLR directly : DO NOT FORGET TO SAVE A FILE AND MODIFY A COPY FOR YOUR OWN SECURITY
Using the pad and dial, access the READ /WRITE function, check by read the info before modify it. Really check the info at the adress before change it. You need to read "C0" WRITE "80"

Then change the code "C0" by "80" in the colonn 03,for the following lines -* 0020 -* 0060 -* 00A0 -* 00E0 -* 0120 -* 0160 -* 01A0 -* 01E0 -* 0220 -* 0260 -* 02A0 -* 02E0 -* 0320 -* 0360 -* 03A0 -* 03E0

I don't know how it looks in your Mac, but on my PC the rows were named like this, and all you needed to do was change the text in column 03 ONLY for the rows listed. Save, and re-upload to the lens through the camera. I used a K100D.

I believe they only show up with a 3 on the end of the name if you access the ROM editor built into the camera.

Those are the same rows I had edited but I didn't want to go through with out making sure. I'm also using a k100d. I'll give it a try. Thanks.

Hello together,
totally happy for the information in this thread, I managed to disable the SDM autofocus of my DA16-50. But things get difficult by patching the 60-250. Using the same procedure, was followed by strange reactions, including both autofocus methods working the same time, in different directions.
Would it be possible, that someone who managed disabling the autofocus on the 60-250 could send me the lensrom? I would compare both versions to hopefully find the reason for the different reactions.
Thanks a lot!

Confirmed: debug file for K5IIs

1st the good news.
I have confirmed the file name is indeed 00077681.541.
Also I do not need PK Tether to access lens ROM. I just put the SD card into the camera and leave the door open.

Now for the bad news.
I cannot get the screw drive to work on the 60-250. It would exhibit erratic behavior. Screw drive will work for the 1st time after powering up the camera, then it would switch to SDM. Sometimes it sounds like both are fighting against each other, but I cannot really confirm it because it happens for just a fleeing moment.

Anyone who got the screw drive working for DA*60-250 please let us know.

The only thing I can think of is you haven't edited enough parts of the ROM... I accidentally followed instructions for the DA* 16-50 when I was trying to patch my 50-135 and it exhibited similar(ish) behaviour. All I can suggest is to see if there are any other segments of the file which still contain the "C0" instead of "80".

Of course, if someone would like to send me a 60-250 to have a play with then you're most welcome

I tried 3 possible ways. I edited all 8x4 (32) C0. The result is the strange one I got. Then I changed only the 1st 16 and then only the last 16. The last 2 ways did not activate screw drive at all.

However there is 1 extra C0 under column 06 line 0060 that I don't dare to touch.

I just want to say big Thank You, to all of You who contributed to this thread.
I just made my 16-50 screw driven lens on K-5, and is fast and snappy like new one. Cost of new sdm and replacement is just prolonged for some better times.

Wow.. after like a year of not visiting the forum, I'm glad i came back!! Got a shot coming up I been wanting to use my 50-135 which dies many years ago and I can't deal with manual focus.. Going to give this a try today!! Awesome.

Mod should take pjm1 post #274 and make a STICKY out of it. I read through the whole thing and he describe it very well.

Edit: YES!!! Did it over lunch! IT WORKSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! IT'S ALIVEEEEEEE!!!!

I'm so happy again one of my fav lens. Yesterday took it to the park and I did not enjoy manual focus in the bright sun :P.
