Hi,

at the end I purchased a K100D off ebay to modify my lenses.

That worked very well.

The 100Ds are not expensive.

Both of my DA* Lenses are screwdrive now. Very fast in deed.

regards,

Madmax

Sure Dean ..... (if I remember correctly ;-) )

Putting the K20D in debug mode

1. First off you create a file called MODSET.442. This is just an ASCII (plan text file) so you can create it using notepad or whateve editor you use for plain text files. The contents of the file :
[OPEN_DEBUG_MENU]

..........................

Let me know if you need more info.
Thanks daacon for the detailed reply.
I'm away for the weekend, so won't have a chance to play around with this until middle of next week. I'll see how I get on and report back successes...or ask for more help
Cheers
Dean

Remember, anyone doing this, don't change the file you save until you've copied it to your hard drive as a backup.

And read Daacon's file as an example, don't put it on an SD card and try to use it.

The file contains data unique to his copy that will stop your own working properly!
Good point I said examples but forgot to mention that those are indeed unique to my lens and should not be used.

Just following up on the help provided by daacon, and many others, in this thread.

I have managed to get my K20 with firmware 1.04 into debug mode and after that the process was really pretty straight forward.

Where I had gone wrong was holding menu while switching on camera with memory card door closed. This allowed me to access a limited debug menu within the main/normal camera menu...but no option to save the lens ROM.

After making the MODSET file as per instructions listed here, with card door open, hold menu and turn on camera...full debug menu, easy to save and load the lens ROMs and I have now converted both a 16-50 and a 50-135. I'll play around with them over the next few days to see what I think...but now know it is easy to switch back if I decide too.

Anyway...all good and thanks again.
Dean

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for this thread, and in particular @pjm1 for his instructions way back on post #274 that worked perfectly for me and my K5. I was able to convert a 50-135 with a dead SDM motor that I picked up inexpensively, and my old 16-50 whose motor had died for the second time, and I couldn't be happier. Thank you everyone!

Hello,

After conversion I noticed that the AF ist quick with the screwdrive when I use the viewfinder and a bit slower when I habe the LV switched on.

Why is that?

Madmax

Screw drive is faster than the SDM. Live View with either method is quite slow (especially in low light) but accurate.

Actually, phase-detection autofocus using the dedicated AF module (when using the optical viewfinder and with the mirror down) is quicker than contrast-detection autofocus using the image sensor (in live view mode with the mirror up).

Although I appreciate all the work done here to explain and diagram this procedure, it's still mega mumbo-jumbo to me. I've never done programming, and "drag-and-drop" is my credo. That leaves my two DA* lenses (the usual suspects) without AF capabilities.

My question is: is there an experienced, capable and honest person here who would perform this procedure on my 16-50 and 50-150 for a reasonable fee? I'm not in a hurry, but I need a deal way below the $500 online estimates I get for the pair.

What he is saying is that if you use the processes detailed in the thread for the purpose of editing the autofocus files in your lens - then when you load those to the SD card you can ship the files from there (email works) to a person who is willing to edit them. Then they can ship back the edited files that you then load into your camera and from there into your lens.

However if that seems too daunting - drop me a PM. I'm doing a conversion for another user on their 16-50 and I would be happy to work with you on your lenses - I also would be happy to help you through the process of unraveling what the process is here in this thread. Which Pentax DSLR bodies do you have access to easily?

I just retread this thread. One user claimed to have converted a 60-250 but this was never confirmed. Has anyone made progress towards converting this lens?
