How to deactivate SDM and allow for screw drive autofocus with DA* 16-50mm f/2.8

It may be water under the bridge now, but there still seems to be interest in this thread. I can confirm that firmware version 1.31 for the K10D DOES go into Debug mode. I just used it to convert my 16-50mm DA* to screw drive.

Not sure what the problem is others are having.
Create the MODSET.TXT file on the SD card, and remember to put a carriage return at the end of the line [OPEN_DEBUG_MENU]
Leave the SD card door open and turn the camera ON.
On the menu that comes up, change DEBUG MODE <DIS> to DEBUG MODE <EN> and you're in business!

Hello everyone,

I have a 4 yr old Pentax 16-50 lens and the SDM on it gave up. I found instructions on the forums to put my Pentax K-3 to debug mode. I am able to successfully put it in debug mode but when I go to menu 4 and press the "Lens Rom Dat Camera => SD" nothing happens. I pop out the SD card and check the .LENS data file is not there in the card.

Wondering if anyone encountered the same problem or found any fixes for this.

Not possible with K-3, believe me, I have tried...

I did it with a K-5 and a lot of other camera can achieve this...but not the K-3.

As Jome says, the debug mode of the k3 and most if not all newer Pentax cameras has been crippled.

I assume you'd prefer to convert your lens yourself, if so buying or borrowing an older model body is the easy answer. Alternately I offer a conversion service. My thread on that is in the marketplace.

In my case (K-7) I only had to name the created file (which is to be copied to SD card in order to enter the debug menu) "MODSET.474". Otherwise the procedure is the same.

Has it already been clarified which other lenses could be "fixed" this way?
DA *50-135 ?
DA *60-250 ?
DA* 200 ?
DA* 300 ?

Is the step-by-step process always the same, or are there some differences (I suppose that the changes in LENSEEP.LNS will be individual as per lens type...?)?

Hello, done successfully with 16-50 and 50-135. AFAIK it is not possible with the 60-250.
Lens have their own eeprom (by model), You can search/google it as it exists a database of Pentax lenses eeprom somewhere (I should have the link or the files in my archives)..

There are minor differences in the number of the items to change but the functional locations are the same.

Also the 60-250 cannot be converted by anyone so far. The Sdm and screw drive fight one another if you try. It is unreliable and not worth attempting so far. We had a report of 1 lens converted in Russia but that file and all info related to the conversion have proven to be a dead end. No one has reproduced this result.

The DA* 200 and 300 work great converted btw.

Years have gone by since I successfully hacked my now-long-departed DA*16-50 to screw drive.

I now have a DA*50-135 in need of the same treatment.

I've borrowed a mate's K10D, firmware 1.31, successfully got it into DEBUG mode and copied the KB421.EEP file to an SD card.

So here's the problem: the .EEP file does not have one single "C0" in the entire file, let alone column 0003!

Have I missed something important?

In my case (K-7) I only had to name the created file (which is to be copied to SD card in order to enter the debug menu) "MODSET.474". Otherwise the procedure is the same. Has it already been clarified which other lenses could be "fixed" this way? DA 50-135 ? DA 60-250 ? DA* 200 ? DA* 300 ? Is the step-by-step process always the same, or are there some differences (I suppose that the changes in LENSEEP.LNS will be individual as per lens type...?)?

Lens have their own eeprom (by model), You can search/google it as it exists a database of Pentax lenses eeprom somewhere (I should have the link or the files in my archives).. Hope it helps. KR. J.

There are minor differences in the number of the items to change but the functional locations are the same. Also the 60-250 cannot be converted by anyone so far. The Sdm and screw drive fight one another if you try. It is unreliable and not worth attempting so far. We had a report of 1 lens converted in Russia but that file and all info related to the conversion have proven to be a dead end. No one has reproduced this result. The DA* 200 and 300 work great converted btw.
