"sandy" feel in manual focus 55-300 Pentax?

Hi,

I have tried without success to find any similar thread here about what I noticed when my new DA 55-300mm arrived today. Before mounting on the camera I noticed a noise like very fine sand whenever i turned the focusing ring. I have never heard or felt anything like this on my other Pentax lenses...

I found on the Digital Photography Review forum where a member back in June 2011 had the same question... the responses there all reassured him this was normal for the 55-300 DA.

Autofocus works fine and I see no problem with the resulting pictures.

Is this something specific to this lens? Should I be concerned?

Thanx,

Adrian

Any Pentax DA lens with a focusing ring at the front and that supports quick shift should sound the same as yours. You can hear some gears moving inside the lens, but that should be about it. Post a video of it and we'll tell you whether or not it's normal!

Thanks for the quick reply, Adam. I checked my other DA lenses (18-55 WR, 50-200, 10-17) and they make a tiny bit of noise, but not like this... my 55-300 sound like as if there is a very fine sandpaper under the focusing ring when I rotate it back and forth....
