DA 18-135mm does not autofocus

Hi everyone,

I bought a Pentax K-5 II Lens Kit(smc DA 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 ED AL [IF] DC WR) in Ashburn, VA on December 2, 2012. But the autofocus feature of the lens has not worked since December 8, 2012. I were really surprised.

I went to the B&H Store in New York City on December 9, 2012. There we tried another lens and this B&H lens does autofocus on my camera properly either.
Also we tried my lens on a B&H's Pentax body. And my lens does not autofocus on the other Pentax body.

So, the problem is due to a manufacturer's defect.

That was not possible to return the kit to dealer in Ashburn, because I have a long business trip in Panama and my flight to Panama was from Newark Airport at the December 9, 2012.

There is no Pentax customer service in Panama. Therefore I sent the lens to Pentax in US by DHL. I spent $145 to do that. Next Pentax will send the repaired or new lens to my home address in USA. And next I will spend my money again to send the lens back to use it in Panama.
That is terrible.

That is strange Pentax warranty politics. Customer in any case has to ship an item at his own cost to Pentax. And that does not matter the item has manufacturer's defect.

Is that true the lens does not support screw drive?

Do somebody know anything regarding how K-5 makes decision which one of two drives it will use for AF?

I suppose K-5 uses a lens id which it receives from the lens. So, is there any possibility to use only screw drive in case the lens supports both?

Nobody know anything regarding these two questions? I do not believe. I really need the info, because I have DA* 50-135 SDM too, therefore I would like to know how it is possible to use screw drive in case of SDM failure.

I don't think the 18-135 lens has screw drive focusing capability. I could tell you for sure but I don't have mine with me right now.

The 18-135 lens is not an SDM lens and does not have screw drive capability.

Okay, I see, thanks.

Also I have DA* 50-135 SDM which has both features(SDM and screw), therefore I would like to know how it is possible to use a screw drive in case of SDM failure.

Does anybody know?
