Telephoto lens

I'm certainly still a newby to photography. I've owned the the k5 with 70mm ltd, 100mm wr macro, and the 50mm macro. For about a year and a half now. I've got the itch for a new telephoto lens but with all the current offerings I'm quite frankly confused. My favorite of the above mentioned lenses is the 100mm wr macro, it consistently amazes me with its versatility and IQ. I have found myself wanting/needing just a bit more reach for those nature shots here recently. Also, I've got an uncle who just purchased the 5D MKIII along with the Canon 70-200 f2.8 L lens and I have to say that is one piece of glass. I would love some feedback from some of you guys "in the know" what we (Pentax) have to offer that is of the same caliber. Anyone have recommendations? I should make it clear that I'm not interested in the newest $7000. Pentax telephoto lens as that is WAY out of the budget, unless someone would like to donate.

Feedback is appreciated.

I would look at either the Pentax DA* 60-250mm or Sigma 70-200mm. Both give you great IQ and versatility, the latter has slightly faster AF but less reach obviously.

One of my favorite lenses is the Tamron 70-200 F/2.8

I recently purchased the DA* 50-135, but haven't used it much as it's only a few weeks old- Black Friday deal.

I'm getting the DA*300 in a couple of days.

I own the Bigma too.

I guess that's a stupid question since you are recommending it Adam, I was just looking on BH Photo and its listed as not available yet. I assume there are a few versions with the newest not available yet?

Edit!

My bad, that's 120-300 not 70-200.

The most comparable lens would be the DA*50-135mm. Same FOV, same aperture speed.

Compared to the DA*60-250, the Sigma is a stop faster and has internal zoom (both significant plusses in my book), but is not weather resistant and is a little heavier. It depends what is most important to you. For what it's worth, I sold my DA*60-250, but kept my Sigma.

Although it's a lovely lens, the DA*50-135 wont give you much more reach than you already have. It's a wonderful portrait lens, but a bit short for wildlife.

Personally, I'd stick with your DFA100WR and think about adding the DA*300 unless you really want a zoom.

DA*300. If used lenses are OK with you, consider the F* and FA* versions too. The FA*80-200 is nice too (though I haven't owned it).

If you can do without the AF you'll really like the K200/2.5. I had the DA*200 for a while and it was nice too.

A 77/85, 135, and 300 makes a nice set. I'd say go for a *300.

If you go for a 300 you'll think it's great and probably won't miss not having a 200. And if you get a 200 you'll think it's nice without having a 300. Since, like me, you appear to like primes, I think the only two zooms with IQ you'll really appreciate are the FA*80-200 and the DA*50-135. But I decided a while ago to stick with only primes above 135mm.
