Anyone have samples from Sigma 28-105 UC-II ?

I have a Sigma 28-105 UC-II (f4-5.6), and I find it makes really soft, crappy images. Even my Phoenix/Cosina 28-210 f4.2-6.7 produces sharper images. I'm wondering if I got a dud, or if this is just the way the lens is. Does anyone have some sample photos? I'm debating sending it back to Sigma for repair, but if it's just the way it is, I'll skip it.

Thing is, it's a really light, small lens with a wonderful range... I would use it, except it's so soft...

Anyhow, sample photos would be great, if anyone has them!

I just saw that the review with samples was yours. Whoops!

It seems there's someone who reviewed more recently than you who agreed. I've heard only middling things about any of the Sigma UC lenses. I thought about pulling the trigger on the 2.8-4.5 version a while ago but I read that it's performance didn't top the DA-50-200 I already have, and that 2.8 aperture was only available at the extreme wide end.

Yeah, saw that. It might be worth sending back just to get them to update the chip to work with older AF systems (It doesn't work on my film body), so then I could use it as a film-only lens (Figuring consumer-grade 400 speed film isn't going to mind a soft lens overly much), and have them look at it at the same time. But... it's like a $25 lens. It would probably cost more for round-trip shipping than it's worth :/

If there wasn't some sentimental value behind it I'd have already sold it...

The Sigma UC/UC-II lenses are not even well made from my experience. They have a horrible tendancy for the markings to wear off, the rubber grips degrade fairly easily, and the internals are not that great.

After having gotten a few in a camera lot I picked up a while back I will not even consider buying one.. they are that bad.
