Notice: Photozone has a review of the DA* 200 2.8 up.

From what I can tell its going to be an excellent lens if you're like Prince and Oprah and love the color purple. Something says 'bad sample' to me. Does not look good.

I'm definitely getting this lens, but I'll wait to make a final judgment.

That shot would put any lens to the test and most would come up with the same purple results because of the drastic contrast and distance from which it was shot.

Note: The important thing about the lens is it will cover Full Frame.

well if you look at the specs of it.---it's identical to the FA* 200 except for the
addidtion of the SDM motor. At least that is what it looks like to me.

Now that I think about it, Photozone was a little too drastic with their review. Too many lenses would have purple fringing with that kind of scene. It's just too much to base the entire review on.

For the most part, the samples are fine. I did see a a bit on one or two spots of reflection in the ice samples, but other than that, it didn't seem too prevalent with the rest of the photo. I'll wait to make some judgment.

Chasseurs d'Images tested the lens and gave it 5 stars out of 5. In translation by me:

"Chromatic aberrations are present, but weak, never more than 0.12 mm at the edges of a 30 by 45 cm print."

They don't seem to have seen the troubles Photozone did.

Interesting that photozone got a review of this lens before I heard any users actually getting it.

Purple CA are commonly place in the sample images. Nevertheless, the lens is still a performer.

Thanks for posting this.

p.s. I wonder whether Hoya decides to send a copy of lens to Klaus for some good press. More reviews the better. He is more impartial with analysis of lenses with no financial incentives in mind.

Ouch!! I hope it's a bad copy

All that pf, thats worse than the fisheye (which I love but the ca/pf is annoying). For sharpness nice edge to edge but being a prime I thought it would better than fa 80-200 / sigma 70-200 / nikon 70-200.

I agree.
PF like that is pretty much normal for all lenses.
PF is also very sensitive to exact focussing, if you turn the focus ring 1 mm to the side, it will change already.

PS: One should not take Klaus too seriously.
He is a layman, who has bought a test program.
I only trust my own tests.
Here are some images I did yesterday:

I see nowhere clearly if those DA* 200 and 300mm do sport traditional screwdriver AF on top of the SDM.

Is anybody able to confirm one way or the other? Thanks !

Why not call it the D FA* 200mm?

Other posts have answered this question. There is no aperture ring on the DA * 200mm. Now I understand why.

Just did a quick test to refute Klaus claim of LCA:

Please keep in mind that the term CA is defined only within the DoF.
Outside the DoF one should not speak of CAs.

No LCA within the DoF:
