Looking for wide options

I'm looking at adding something wide to my kit. Just to give an idea what price range I'm thinking of, 2 of the ones I'm considering are the Pentax DA 15mm F4.0 and the Sigma 10-20 F3.5. I know one is a zoom and one is a prime, but open for either type. Just wondering what thoughts are on those two, and open for any other suggestions as well. I currently have the DA 70mm Ltd, and LOVE it, so that draws me to the 15mm.

It begs the question of how wide do you want to go? Wider also increased distortion, which is tied to how you might be using the lens - landscapes, interiors, architecture, or ?? You can gain width and not increase the distortion by stitching.
  • The Sigma 8-16 is really wide - in many ways possibly tooooo wide - which tends to be very subjective
  • The 10-20 or 12-24 range is a good compromise in that it tends to limit the amount of distortion present
  • Then there is the ever present prime vs. zoom question in terms of Image Quality
  • For Astro uses, speed (f2.8) does add versatility, otherwise f4 is usually fine for the applications.

I guess more detail would have been good. lol My thinking for a wide lens is landscape shooting and possibly landscape with buildings. (churches, old barns, etc) I don't think I'd want any wider than 10mm, as I'm not a big fan of the fisheye look. Don't see my doing much Astro stuff, so 2.8 is not a deal breaker by any means.

I've seen both Sigma 10-20. The one at 3.5 and the other one as mentioned by koper. Other than the fixed aperture, is image quality of both on par with each other?

I had a 10-20 and found it a great lens, but it was fairly big and heavy and had a soft image quality. I sold it and bought a DA15 instead, and much prefer it for both image quality and size. I don't really miss the ultra wide below 15. For me, it was the right choice, and I'd happily recommend the DA15 - especially as it will complement your DA70.

I have the Tamron 10-24 zoom and the DA 15mm Limited. I like the fact that the Tamron goes down to 10mm, but at that focal length there is a lot of edge distortion. Its not a super sharp lens, which I think the Sigma might be a little better but neither will be in the same league as the 15mm.

That 15mm is small, light, and absolutely awesome.

I like the Sigma 12-24: with version II out, you can pick version1 up in the $300 range. It is virtually distortion free & evenly sharp to the edges on crop sensor. From about 15mm to 24mm filters can be used. It does a nice job with flare though Ca can be a problem, however, the latter easily PPs out. Oh, icing on the cake is that it is splendidly built.

I love it because it works on my Fx and Dx bodies. If Pentax ever gets an FFer, you are in business. Here are a few on crop sensor--Good Luck Btw, the Sigma 15-30 is good n' sharp & in this price range too.

15mm

12mm

24mm

Koper, those are some nice examples of the Simga 8-16. I'll have to look at that option.
