Sigma 18-250 f3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM- Opinions wanted

I'm on the point of purchasing a K5 and this looks like a pretty good lens for the money... it's retailing at just under 300.00 gbp in the UK at one or two places. There isn't much information about this lens on the site that I've found ...has anyone got opinions to offer please?

I'm looking to do some birding photography btw.

If you are for an all-around zoom lens, the options are:
(a) Pentax DA18-135mm WR
(b) Pentax DA18-270mm
(c) Sigma 18-250mm
(d) the old Tamron 18-250mm/Pentax DA18-250mm.

The first three can be purchased new. B&H had a good deal for Xmas for the DA18-135mm, and that lens is WR. That s to considered with the K-5 if you need WR.

The newer DA18-270mm has not been tested here yet. It is said that it is a Tamron lens rebadged by Pentax. DPreview tested the newest Tamron 18-270mm recently.

The Sigma is well considered, although OS is redundant with the camera SR, and the lens is slightly larger than the others.

The Tamron/Pentax DA18-250mm was manufactured by Tamron and rebadged by Pentax. It can be only purchased second hand (Eg PF marketpalce, Adorama Used,, but is has a very good reputation among all Pentaxians. The Tamron 18-250mm tend sto be cheaper than the DA18-250mm in the marketplace, but these are the same lens. Adorama has one for $349: Used Tamron 18-250 Xrdi-ii Ld F/pxaf.

I have both the DA18-135mm and DA18-250mm. I went away from the Sigma because of weight and size. I have the DA18-135mm for WR and my workhorse is my DA18-250mm.

Depending upon the price situation in UK, you may consider any of these, although I believe that many Pentaxians incl. myself would steer you towards the DA18-135mmWR or the older Tamron/DA18-250mm.

I hope that the comment may help.

Hello and thank you for your reply... I don't think the 135mm would be adequate although the WR would be desirable. I will think about what you have said although availability of that old 18-250 Tamron Lens over here looks a bit scarce.
