Finally got my FA 43

Couldn't really run to a new one at the mo' (520 is the lowest in the uk,-$838) and rarely do they come up over here second hand. Until now....
Silver, Made in Japan, sub 15000 serial number and pretty much as new. All for 400
Still quite costly compared to over the pond but that's life.

So bit by bit I'm building my stable in the event of you know what. FA31 is next.....

And if the internet is to be believed it's the first incarnation of the lens as it's from the 0 to 16000 serial number production run. Suggesting that these have lead in the glass or the coatings (it certainly has a purple sheen to the front element as oppose to a green tint) before Pentax were required to stop.
But of course as I don't have another FA43 that's largely irrelevant so I shall just go out and shoot.
Still, I reckon I got myself a bargain.

That's a good price, seriously. A silver MIJ with a 15xxx serial sold for $550 US yesterday.

I don't know if there's quite a consensus on the serial numbers and leaded glass. I've heard it was 1-6000, but that could be totally wrong. Either way, the colored pouches come with early versions and look way nicer than the standard black.

So is this glass the desirable one or not? Why/why not?

I believe that some of these lenses had more than one color of pouch before the decline to black? I know the initial release 43 came with a tan pouch (serial number 2779), the 77 came in a forest green pouch (serial number #3119). I must have waited to buy the 31? serial number is 18838 and it came in a burgundy red pouch.

5 years ago there was some interesting talk on this forum about specific production runs and minor modifications to the FA Limited lenses--the Three Amigos. Don't know how far back the threads are searchable?

Somewhere within this blog Google Translate lies the serial number explanation.

the guy has two lenses next to each other, one low serial one high. The 'lead' lens has a reddish purple tinge to the glass and the newer one is green. He states that the 3 runs of slightly different lens start with the batch 0000001 to 16000.

But yes, the real early ones had a brown pouch and Pentax was inset with black on the lens cap embossing. Sadly the link isn't for the page I've seen.

And can I find that exact post again ?
No !!!!

But who cares when it can do this ? F2.2. 1/25th iso 400 and handheld.
