Opinions on Pentax 17-70mm f/4 DA SMC AL IF SDM Lens?

I'm looking for a zoom lens in the 20-50 or 20-70mm range.

I've been considering the Tamron 17-50 2.8 at $499, the Sigma 17-50 at $620, and sigma 24-70 at $824

But then I saw this Pentax lens for only 520 bucks, barely above the Tamron but covering much more ground. Does anyone have any experience with this lens? Is the image quality comparable to the 2 more expensive Sigmas (both of which I've shot with and liked a lot)? I don't care that much about the wider apertures on the more expensive lenses since I'll mostly be shooting video where I light all the scenes myself anyway, so I don't anticipate low light situations. Mostly care about image quality.

I guess as an aside, is the sigma 24-70 worth that much money? I have the sigma 10-20 f3.5 and love it dearly, so I don't really need my next lens to reach down into the teens, a 24mm lower bound is sufficient for what I would wanna do with it.

The review for the Pentax lens is here

Also, check the lenses' database, I'm sure you'll find some beefy reviews to put your mind at ease

My recommendation for Pentax 17-70/4 , sharpness throughout the frame and along the entire length, the colors are saturated and contrasting, has washers on maunt, constant aperture, fast focus

17-70 is a handy range for a single-lens option. xx-50 is a bit short for portraits or details and 24-xx is a bit long for wide use.

Since you already have a 10-20, I'd suggest the Tamron 28-75. Some turn up in the Marketplace from time to time.

Photozone state this is the best standard lens in the Pentax lineup Despite the F4 this would be my choice of all the lenses you are looking at

My copy had wicked lens creep. Also was less than snappy while focusing on the longer end.

I sold it and bought the 16-50.

Unfortunately Pentax doesn't have a slam-dunk general zoom beyond the 18-55 (which is stellar considering its price).

17-70/4. It's beast. Sharp at all lengths and wide open, great macro capability and colors.
