If you can find a copy of the discontinued Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 HSM lens, I think that would be perfect for you. Great focal length range, sharp from f/2.8, and very fast & silent HSM autofocus. They're hard to find and they sell quickly whenever they come up, so you have to keep a sharp eye out.

1). Whatever you do, don't wait to save up. Get the lens now!

2). Get a long zoom lens. Your kids will eventually be in team sports, performing on a stage, or being involved in other things at an unpredictable distance from you! You need to be prepared for quick FL changes at soccer games, concerts, or just playing outside. Kids move fast. I found that an 80-200/2.8 for FF was a little too short for my kid's activities (soccer, baseball, concerts, 3rd grade spring dance festival, graduation) . I'd go for the 55-300.

Getting the images and memories is more important than not being able to get them with a "better" lens! Think about it from the memories, not artistic perspective.

My thoughts on the FA77 for you. It's regarded as a special lens and I want it myself but it's pretty close to your Sigma 50. If it were me then I would get a longer lens or a telephoto zoom. If you have the cash then the DA* 50-135 would be an outstanding choice.

Just for fun you could get a cheap Pentax M135f3.5 ($50ish) to check out that focal length. It would be great for some events and in the backyard. I've also been very impressed with repaap's M75-150f4 that he used in the single in December challenge (1 photo everyday). This would be an outstanding complementary lens to your Sigma 50 while you decide which lens to get.

Hi, I am wanting to buy another lens (currently have Sigma 50mm 1.4) but I'm wanting something longer. I mostly take photos of my kids. I am not sure if I should get the Pentax 77mm 1.8, the Sigma 85 1.4 or the Tamron 90mm 2.8 di macro. The Tamron is about half the price of the other 2 lenses, price doesn't matter too much, but it will just take me a little bit longer to save up for either of the other 2. Should I wait and save up for either the 77mm or 85mm? If so, which do you recommend? I really like how much lighter the 77mm is..

You really need to decide how much subject isolation you want. I've gotten some great kid shots with my Tamron 90mm, but they are nowhere near as special as ones that can be gotten from faster glass, or from longer glass of the same 2,8 aperture. Good luck

Maybe you should consider a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. Some of them can be had for very good prices, and it is a great lens for a lot of kids' activities such as playing outside, sports, or indoor performances. If you find one at a good deal, you could always resell it if it doesn't suit your shooting style.

I have the DFA 100 wr macro and really like it. It's af is quick & weight is light. I shot this handheld iso 400, av, f11, 1/125. Good luck with your purchase.

I don't really want to complicate your life, but, for around the price of a FA77, you can get a used DA*50-135/2.8. I have both, and the 77 is every bit as good as everyone says, but the 50-135 is fast and phenomenally good for a zoom, and very versatile, particularly for moving subjects.
