Koper and Adam did sum up well: the DA18-270mm is an all-around lens, or all-in-one lens. There are pros and cons, and such an all-around lens will never have the IQ of a prime lens. But a prime lens will never have the flexibility of an all-around zoom lens...
Many Pentaxians do have both (all around lens, high-quality zoom lenses and prime lenses), and I am among them. Each lens has its own uses and merits.
If you do not like the DA18-270mm (for example for its price), you may consider the older DA18-250mm or the new DA18-135mm WR. While some people are critical of these two lenses, many non-Pentax dSLR owners envy us for having the choice between a solid all-around lens (DA18-250mm) and a WR all-around lens (DA18-135mm).
