I agree with adpo. Pretty much any lens can be used to shoot a portrait. (Though admittedly I favor the DA 70). I would pick up an inexpensive light stand, a used manual flash such as a Nikon SB-25, (which can also be used on camera in auto mode), a set of inexpensive triggers, an umbrella adapter, and a combination shoot-thru/reflective umbrella. That will get you started, and you can expand your kit from there.

I used the word inexpensive a couple of times. I don't mean cheap, I mean the best you can afford within your overall budget. Avoid the cheap stuff, it's more expensive in the long run.

M or A 50mm 1.7; M or A 50mm 1.4. All very nice for portraits, if you are willing to manually focus, and use M setting for M lenses.

My favorite portrait lens - right now my favorite lens period - is my Voigtlander Nokton SL II 58/1.4. CameraQuest has them new for $449. If you want to go cheaper I'd add my vote to the others suggesting an A50mm 1.7 or 1.4, and use the money you save for an old Sunpak 383 and some cheap Cowboystudio wireless triggers (if you want to go the Strobist route, otherwise pick up some more glass!).

Sigma 50mm f1.4 is sharp wide opened...

FA 77 is another excellent portrait lens...

Get the lens from Adorama or bhphoto and it will be a lot cheaper...

All the best!
