Sigma 17-70 > sigma 24-70 2.8 hsm

Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5 >> 24-70 2.8 ....move up, sideways, or down?
I currently own the 17-70 and was wondering what kind of move this would be
I am looking for sharper and more saturated colors at or near wide open from 40-70mm range.
I would use it for indoor volleyball (2.8 is handy) but also for portraits and a general walk around.

I am not worried about loosing the 17-24 range as I am planning to keep the 17-70.

All opinions welcomed

Thanks

Randy

Up in terms of image quality, sideways in terms of FOV, so I'd say sideways overall The 24-70mm is a FX lens, so if the Pentax FX format camera ever comes out then you'll be ready!

The Sigma 24-70mm (constant aperature) f2.8 is widely considered as one of the best Sigma lens' ever built; if one doesn't mind the weight of the lens, and also the size - especially the 82mm front filter size.

That constant open aperature makes a considerable difference. It is also one of the fastest focusing lens make throughout the PK lens format. The Sigma hsm is considerably more reliable than anything made by Pentax with the sdm designation

I'd be surprised if IQ is similar between the two. My Sigma 17-70 HSM version performs nice, but isn't really a pixel peeper, especially on the long end.

is the previous version of the 24-70 2.8 close to the new hsm?
seems like a lot of extra money just for hsm

thanks

I would personally opt for the HSM, even though the optics got improved as well. Screwdrive on big lenses is so last decade
