Pentax SMC A135/f2.8 - underrated?

Just wondering, why Pentax SMC A135/f2.8 is so underrated. Is it really not so good? I had an opportunity to own this lens but it was mechanically bad so I let it go and couldn't test. Now I am looking for a good K135 copy but wondering why A135 is so beaten up in various discussions.

If you see a recent market thread for this lens, pictures taken by this lens are really splendid. There is another comparison here, strangely they also concluded A135 as a poor lens though it seems to have performed well.

135mm prime comparison

Just wondering, any direct comparison with K135?

I think it's mainly because it is a 4 element design like the Takumar 135 rather than the 5 element design of the M135/3.5. It shares the same optical design as the Takumar Bayonet 2.8. The K135/2.5 is a 6 element design, the Takumar Bayonet 2.5 is a 4 element design.

BTW it's rated as high as the 50/1.7 in the Lens Review Database with 19 reviews...

I had one - it's not a bad lens, but neither is it fantastic. It's probably a little underrated.

I liked mine much better than the M135/3.5 I'd had earlier, though admittedly I may have had a bad copy of the M135. The A135 was good, but not nearly as good as the F/FA135. The FA135 is actually very good, and it's one of my key lenses.

Unless I need A-setting, personally, I prefer the K 135/2.5 or smc tak 135/2.5.
There are also half dozen other 135mm in f2.8 as good from other brands.

Preference is a different thing than the objective comparison would love to see some comparision, especially after seeing some splendid images from A135
