My clear preference now is for a good quality extended standard zoom, with supporting specialty lenses.

For APS-C:

Zoom - 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 (would prefer 16-90m f4), 10-17mm fisheye

Prime - 14mm f2.8, 28mm f2.0, 56mm f1.4, 135mm f2.8 macro, 300mm f4, 1.4X TC

Note, the primes are not specific lenses, they are my general preferences, but my kit is tempered by practicalities. I have some the above and some close-enough substitutes. For example, I own the DA 15mm f4 even though there is an actual 14mm 2.8. I bought the 15mm for its smaller size and because most people think it's the better lens. I didn't buy the DA 55mm 1.4, because I already have a good-enough FA 50mm 1.4. I use a D FA 100mm macro, because there is no Pentax 135mm f2.8 macro. I don't have a 28mm f2, but I have an FA 28mm f2.8, and an FA 35mm f2.

My prime kit is almost complete with DA 15, 21, 40, 70, FA 31, FDA 100, DA*200. On my wish list, DA*55, a new 135 Limited and the long awaited teleconverter.

My zoom list is not as critical to me. I would love to have an 18-135 WR with better performance on the long end, and faster but who wouldn't'. So for now my DA 17-70 and Sigma 70-200 f3.8 from the 80's will have to do.

My current set fits me well: 18.55wr + 55.300 af zooms, 15fish + DAs 40 70 + 100 macro (promaster not pentax, sigh) for af primes. Smc-a 24 + manual 28, 50 and 400 manual primes and a 70.150 manual zoom. Mix and match options galore except in really wet weather, but I usually take the IZ 70.150 and a dry cloth to go with the 18.55wr. Mostly the kit is 24 40 70 + specialty lens, be it macro fisheye or telezoom.

I don't know that I would own them all, but I'd like the option of picking from the following list.

16-50mm f2.8 DC/SDMII WR (newer/faster autofocus)
18-200mm f3.5-5.6 DC WR
24-80mm f2.8 DC/SDMII WR
35mm f1.8 DC WR (comparable to Nikon AF-S 35mm f1.8, Sony 35mm f.18 SAM)
50mm f1.8 DC WR (comparable to Nikon AF-S 50mm f1.8, Sony 50mm f.18 SAM, Canon EF 50mm f1.8)
50-135mm f2.8 DC/SDMII WR (newer/faster autofocus)
70-200mm f2.8 DC/SDMII WR (comparable to Canon or Nikon 70-200 f2.8)
55-300mm f4.0-5.6 DC WR (update to existing 55-300mm)
135-400mm f4.0-5.6 DC WR (similar to Canon 100-400mm or Nikon 80-400mm) (200-400 f4.0 would be nice but would be expensive)

I figure the camera bodies are WR, so the lenses should be WR also.
This would pretty much be my list also. I would also add 8-16mm/4 DC WR, 24mm/1.8 DC WR, 28mm/1.8 DC WR (nikon 28mm/1.8 AF-S equivalent), 85mm/1.8 DC WR (nikon 85mm/1.8 AF-S equivalent) and 135mm/2 DC WR (canon 135/2 L equivalent). Also I would like to see sigma 120-300/2.8 on Pentax mount.

My dream kit would be:

FF:
24mm/1.8
28mm/1.8
35mm/1.8
50mm/1.8
85mm/1.8
135mm/2 (no 1.4's as I would trade some speed for portability and lower price)
and maybe 24-80/2.8+70-200/2.8 zooms (these may be too expensive and big)

APS-C:
8-16mm/4 WR
DA* 16-50mm/2.8
DA* 50-135/2.8 (with focusing speed capable of sports)
DA*300/4 (+1,4x TC)
Sigma (or Pentax) 120-300/2.8 WR (+1,4x and 2x TC's)
135-400/4-5.6 WR
and 18-200/3.5-5.6 WR (no primes as FF is for those)

That would be a LOT of money and glass. But one can dream, no?

Can't never decide which lens could be my kit lens.
I though I can travel light, but last count on site is 8 lenses...

Mine is perfect right now...

DA 15/4
FA 31/1.8
M 50/1.4

If only that 50 was a 58 or something. It really messes up the logarithmic focal length intervals...

Well I now have my ideal 15/35/70 Limited kit that I've wanted for a while (not yet had a chance to go out and shoot with the three yet though ). I'd love them all to be a stop faster, but then I wouldn't want them to be any bigger so I guess what I really want is new laws of physics As for any new lenses I'd like to see, maybe:

Zooms
The 17-70 but weather sealed and with DC instead of SDM focusing
The 50-135 with DC rather than SDM

Primes
Maybe a DA 10 f4.5 Limited?
Something like a 135 Limited if it were possible (I doubt it is, at least within 'limited' sizing)

Probably the only lens I am missing from my ideal kit would be the DA15mm LTD...but I dont know if I would ever use it. Probably those times when I dont wanna lug around the Sigma 8-16mm. But if I am carrying that hunk of glass I wanna go REAL wide. 15mm, while wide, is not REAL wide.

Let me see....

I usually decide how much to carry depending on where I'm going and what I'm doing. Mostly primes when I'm not being hurried by others. "HURRY UP DAD !"
Its going to get worse if I start carrying 2 bodies.

These are all lenses that I either have or thought about acquiring at some point (not the "dream" lens kit)

1 lens Zoom kit: DA18-135 (from 21mm to about 100mm)
2 lens Zoom kit: DA18-135, DA55-300
Ideal 2 lens Zoom kit DA18-135 , DA*60-250
3 lens Zoom kit Sig 8-16, DA18-135, 55-300

... no real desire to get a fast zoom wide - normal ( to heavy and unwieldy for me)

Prime kit
1 lens prime kit DA21 for FOV, or DA35 for versatility
Ideal 1 lens prime kit FA31

2 lens prime kit DA21 , DA70 (street kit) or DA15, FA43

3 lens prime kit DA15, DA35, DA70 or.... DA15, FA43, DFA100
Ideal 3 lens prime kit DA15, FA31, DA70 (or FA77)

4 lens prime kit DA15, DA21, FA43, DFA100

5 lens prime kit DA15, DA21, FA43, DFA100, DA*300

5 lenses is the limit, Its a bit hard to juggle more than 5 lenses but i've done it before..

2 Portrait lens kit FA43 , DA70
Ideal 2 portrait lens kit FA31 , FA77
Dream 3 portrait lens kit FA31, DA*55, FA*85

Travel (cover everything) kit DA15, DA18-135, FA43, DFA100, DA55-300

Wildlife travel kit. DA*300, 1.7x, DA55-300
Ideal Wildlife travel kit, DA*300 , 1.7x, DA*60-250

Motorsports kit DA*300, DA55-300, DA21, maybe Sig 8-16
Ideal Motorsports kit DA*300, DA*60-250 (or Sig 70-200/2.8 faster focus, but heavier) , DA21, maybe Sig 8-16

Birding kit DA*300 , 1.7x
Ideal Birding kit Sigma 500mm/4.5
Dream Birding kit DA560 AW, FA*250-600 f5.6

1 lens Macro kit DFA100 WR
ideal 1 lens Macro kit DFA100 WR assited with AF160 ringflash
Dream Macro kit DFA100WR, FA*200 f4 macro.

Fun MF bokeh lens kit: Revuenon 55mm /1.2
Ideal fun MF bokeh lens kit Pentax K 50mm /1.2

Phew, That was had work:

few conclusions from this.

1) Seems that I'm only 2 or maybe 3 lenses away well....4 lenses ( no actually its 5 lenses ) away from my "ideal" kits.
2) My poor DA35 macro seem to be getting neglected.
3) I've got a gap of high quality glass between 100mm and 300mm. DA55-300 is OK here DA18-135 up to 135 not so much.
4) I think I've already got too many lenses.

My ultimate Pentax Prime Kit would look something like this:

Samyang 10mm f/2.8
Pentax DA15mm, f/4
Samyang 24mm f/1.4
Pentax FA 31mm f/1.8
Pentax FA 43mm f/1.9
Cosina 55mm f/1.2
Pentax FA 77mm f/1.8
Pentax FA *85mm f/1.4
Pentax D-FA 100mm WR f/2.8
Pentax K-200 f2.5
Sigma 500mm f/4.5
Pentax FA* 600mm f/4.

I would also like them all to be Weather Resistant!!!!!!

when you consider in most occasions with film 24 was never wide enough and that equates to 16 on a crop sensor, i agree 15 is not anywhere remotely "really wide" but then again wide is only relative to what you need, if you cannot envision ever using a 15 then it is not missing from your ideal kit at all.

You don't need more than three ....

Well, unabashedly violating the Zack Principle referenced in my sig, my dream kits are measured in focal lengths, not actual lenses. My pharmaceutically-induced fantasy kit is 31/43/77 - and I would own no other lenses whatsoever. From time to time that kit threatens to become reality. The work required to realize Part deux of that dream is all that holds me back.

So, kits - from 60's mentor "you don't need more than three, half-again or twice as long" tutelage:
24 35 85
24 50 100
28 50 100
35 50 100
His instruction was best suited to photographing people - he admonished me never to expose a frame that did not contain a face - because faces tell stories. (Landscape - Ansel Adams - was an entirely different course and mentor).

Since I like MF K lenses i can take any combination other than the first (I dont have an 85)
K24/2.8
K35/3.5
K28/2 - K28/3.5
K50/1.4 - K55/1.8
K105/2.8
So I pick my three lenses to suit what I plan to shoot on any given outing.

I could also do a
100 135 200
K100/2.8
K135/2.5
K200/2.5
In theory I could reduce my collection to just the above named lenses and be happy, but I'd have a hard time selling the FA's. I could dump the DA's without a care. Of course all of this is just Geeky-Me and probably is of little value to anyone else. But the thread did seem to ask my opinion, so ....

I assume his lenses were for film cameras and yours are used on APS-C, so your kit is missing a wide angle, between 15-18mm.
