That is my exact finding as well. Unless it's something specific - cityscapes, zoo/animals/birds/etc, or other specific uses that I'll be able to prepare for - the "normal view" can always be worked around. And for other uses sometimes I'll use zooms but I could use primes as well. I find it easier to move quickly to frame my subject than to try to chase them with the zoom ring. Of course I'm mostly talking about my kids

Sorry that I took a while to see the post, I don't log in that often...

I primarily use the 40, I'm used to the field of view, and I can instinctively figure out the distance and coverage. It's used mostly for environmental portraits (and random things as well). This focal length allows a good working distance that normally is available, indoors or outdoors. I don't take much of head shots with it, but I do a lot of half body shots.

The 21, I normally use for group shots. A good 10-15 feet allows coverage for a decent size group. The only sort of limitation here is the aperture, which is a bit too narrow for indoor.

The 70, I used the least. It is sort of reserved for proper portraits and situations when I want the bokeh and subject separation. I love longer focal lengths, short telephoto (35-85mm), but the the 70 requires too much distance to be practical in regular travel situations.

The thing with using primes to get used to the field of view so that you can sort of predict the distances. In case I needed to work quickly (like with a impatient family), I would go just a tad wider that I speculate.

I would really like to know how that worked out for you. Of those, I have only the 40 - love it, great IQ, but when I find I can't zoom and don't have time to change. How (well) did you manage that? I am jealous of all of you that can just use primes - I still don't understand how you make that happen with an impatient family on a vacation.

Given that I am "forced" into a zoom lifestyle, I've considered this model ideal in ff land; Canon 24-105 and 70-200/4.0 But I don't have nor want ff, so converting to Pentax range I should want 17-70 and 50-135. I have the 17-70 and aspire to the 50-135. And yet, I'm thinking that even for a zoom, something can be better than the 17-70 and that if I had the 50-135, I would really want the 60-250 instead. So for APS-C I don't seem to be able to exactly duplicate the ideal ff equivalent.

Sorry, that should read "......when I travel I find I can't zoom...."

FA 31 Ltd
FA 43 Ltd

An old thread, but seems to have new legs for now. Can't remember if I posted the first time around or not...

First off, I want all * and all Limiteds. But for a "realistic" dream list...

APS-C
DA 21 Ltd (have and love)
FA 31 Ltd (have DA35/2.4)
DA 40 Ltd (have 40XS and love, but want quick shift, hood, and 49mm filter ring)
DA* 55 (have M50/1.4 and DA50/1.8...actually I'm pretty happy with the DA50. If it had quick shift and distance/DOF markings, I might be satisfied.)
DA 20-40mm Ltd Zoom (have the 18-55, love the size and range, but want the Limited...do I have to justify it?)

That would be my core group. Would I want the other Limiteds? A macro? A tele zoom? Of course! But I could do probably 80% of what I want with the above group, and I already have cheaper subs for all elements of that group. So now it's just a matter of priorities and budget going forward. The downside is filter threads all over the place. I really could be fine with only the DA Ltd primes, with all 49mm filters. Why do I care about that so much more than mere practicality would suggest?

35mm Film
28/2.8
40/2.8
50/1.4
85/2
135/3.5

Own them all, quite content! I consider it a 3-prime kit (28-50-85) with a tele and a compact all-rounder to boot.

6x7
45/4
105/2.4
150/2.8

Own them all, would like to add the 90/2.8 and maybe replace the 150 with the 165 for a little broader spacing...oh, and a 67II body! I don't want any longer lenses, and they don't make any wider or faster than what I have, so I'm content!

I currently own three lenses, but my ideal kit would consist of five: a standard zoom, a tele zoom (wildlife), two primes (35 and 50 mm) and an ultra wide-angle (architecture, landscapes etc.). These are my two ideal lens kits, one that I can realistically complete over the next two or so years on my current student budget, one hypothetical future kit when I'm rich and powerful

Realistic kit:

1. Samyang 14 mm f/2.8
2. Pentax DA L 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 WR (own it)
3. Pentax DA 55-300 mm f/4-5.8 WR
4. Pentax DA 35 f/2.4 (own it)
5. Pentax SMC A 50 mm f/1.7 (own it)

Hypothetical, perfect future kit (based on lenses available as of today):

1. Pentax DA 12-24 mm f/4
2. Pentax DA* 16-50 mm f/2.8
3. Pentax DA 55-300 f/4-5.8 WR
4. Pentax 31 mm f/1.8 Limited or Sigma 35 f/1.4 'Art'
5. Pentax DA* 55 mm f/1.4

Zeiss 50/2 Makro-Planar (have and won't sell)
Fa 77 (have and won't sell)

This has been discussed a bit before, but time for a new one.
Here's the rules.

Choose whichever lenses you feel would be "perfect" for you. If you're one to have a whole slew of lenses and tote them all around, list them. If you're like me and want a small group, then good too.
Lenses don't have to be K-mount only. This can discuss lenses that you wish Pentax had an equivalent, or tweaks to existing lenses.

Here's mine.

WA- I wish pentax had an equivalent of Canon or Nikons 16-35/2.8. They're IF and IZ, which is what really sells it for me. I wish the Canon had the 77mm filter size of the first version, but oh well. Unfortunately our 16-50 doesn't have IZ which is a turn off for me if I want to take it hiking or whatever. I don't like external moving parts. I know you can't get a zoom with that big of a reach to IZ, which is why I'm ok with taking an IZ zoom with smaller reach and a 50mm prime to cover the middle ground.

Nifty Fifty- DFA 50mm. This the 50mm that I take with me, mainly because of Macro. I wish it was WR, but beggars can't be choosers. I go this with my k10d for a really good price a few years ago and it has stayed with me since day 1.

Tokina ATX-Pro 828. Love this lens, hate the AF/MF clutch that Tokina uses. If pentax had a WR version of this lens with quick-shift and SDM I'd ditch the Tokina. Until then, this keeps up with the CaNikon options, and is more useful for me than the 50-135 with the extra reach. Also has FF options and gets used on film every once in a while.

Long lens- Nikon 200-400/4 with mods. My dream lens is still the Pentax 250-600, but the odds of ever finding one are next to nil, and if Pentax released a 200-500/4 with WR and SDM I think it would sell like hotcakes

So that's my list. The WA zoom would be good for most running around options with one lens, and I love nature photography and the long lens is good for that. Long lens would only come out as needed. Right now I'm wide angle-less and I don't like it. My 16-50 was stolen, so I only have the 50 and the Tokina right now. Would buy a new 16-50 but I'm waiting to see what comes out this year. I unfortunately sold my kit lens when I sold my K10d, and the K5 I bought didn't have a kit lens. I can't see spending any money on any more non WR lenses since I'm outside all the time.

The 18-135 is still a contender as a walk-around, but only if it basically falls into my lap. Would have to get a killer deal on it, and likely with a new body in order to justify the $400 price of it. I like the lens, and will be purchasing it if I don't like the new DA* option that comes out or the new DA wide.

What's your dream lens kit like?

I'm going to list the ones I have and the ones I wish I had:

Have:

16-45mm f4 - This lens allows me to go Super Wide angle without breaking the bank. Plus it's versatile. CONS; Noisy, not WR, limited range
20-40mm f2.8-4 - Just got this one so I can't say much other than its quiet, WR, sharp, great Pentax colors. CONS; extreme limited range, red Canon-like ring, expensive
35 mm Macro f2.8 - Clinically sharp across the frame, compact, well built and you can do Macro. CONS; you really have to get close to do Macro. great for close-ups, colors especially blue bleed slightly at high ISO.
50 mm f1.8 - Fast , relatively good picture quality, cheap, compact, no big deal if it gets stolen or dropped. CONS; Missing that WOW factor
77mm f1.8 - Fast great picture quality well built, no need to say more. CONS; Noisy , expensive.
100mm f2.8 Macro - Fast, well built, looks good, WR and Macro. CONS; You need to pre manual focus a lot
31mm f1.8 - It's in the mail so I can't comment. CONS; unbelievably expensive !

Wish I had:

50mm f2.8 Macro - 100mm is to long, 35mm is too short, 50mm is just about right for Macro.
17-70mm f4 - A little bit more reach than 16-45mm , makes a great travel lens.
200 f2.8 SDM - Nice quiet, perfect for sports and special events like weddings.
18-135mm f3.5-5.6 - Great for travel, WR, relatively cheap, relatively compact .
