(Story time) It's times like this that I love being a Pentaxian

So, any student at a school with a photo program that sells Pentax gear knows how great Pentax's discounts for students can be. So good that a couple of years ago, I scored the D FA 100mm Macro 2.8 for $400 (a deal I jumped on at the time.)

But nothing prepared me for today, when the already insane discounted gear was put on sale.

Holy crap.

That 100mm macro? Now $334. The DA 35 2.4? $99.

That said, I didn't buy either of those. What I did buy was the DA 40mm Limited for a satisfactory $259, the 16-45 f/4 for $179, and the 55-300 for $190.

Note that all of these are brand new in box, never opened.

Anyway, I just felt like sharing that deal with everybody, because all I could think was .

Anyway, in order to make this into an actual thread: Did I make the right decisions? I decided to hold off on the 35mm simply because I want to eventually pick up the FA 31 Limited. Oh yeah, I could have gotten the 18-135 for $350 too. But I didn't. Too many other great lenses in that focal length, and I don't mind swapping.

Also, hi! First post here, been lurking a long time. I debated putting this in the general forum, mods feel free to move it if it doesn't belong here.

Holy crap! Those are amazing prices! Whish I could get something similar here...

The 35mm 2.4 for 99$ is a real deal, you will be able to sell it for the same price when buying the 31mm. I would definetively go for it, this plastic wonder, could be very useful (I prefer the 35mm 2.8 macro but for this price do not hesitate)

Welcome to the forums!

If I may ask, where the heck are you getting these awesome student discounts?! I'd take the 16-45 and 35 for that price any day...

Yeah, where are these photo programs that sell Pentax gear? I need to go bribe some students to buy some stuff for me. Actually, come to think of it, I'm an alumnus of a photo program, but my college didn't sell "gear" when I was there -- only film and paper and stuff like that...

I would definitely have bought the 40 AND the 18-135 at that price. A walkaroung all-weather lens is a boon, I think.

No chances of prices like this existing in my area.

I'd definitely be interested in how you get the student discount program. I'd get any one of my friends who are still in college/etc to buy lenses for me

Student Discount

I googled this and Pentax did have a program in 2008. I'd love to know more about this! I have a relative in film school.

Great deals! Knowing you can get such discounts might help offset the cost of the programs. I would consider enrolling in shorter programs if any were near me. Please let us know the details of the student discount and schools that qualify if you can find out. Thanks!

So many cameras, so little time.

I have been a Pentaxian since the very earliest SLR cameras. In those days, the 60's, the Pentax cameras were all the rage. They took good pictures and you could exchange lenses. Then came the onslaught of Nikon, Canon, Minolta, etc. etc.. While I like all cameras, my heart still swings Pentax because that is how I started. I was out of diapers and into Pentax.

It is a smart marketing tool for Pentax to offer students a discount. Product loyality sells stuff, as we see in the Apple phenom. So good for Pentax. We need more Pentaxians, after all, we want our little camera company to stay around. They have heart, don't ya think?
