Tamron 70-200 2.8 follow up

The weather was a bit better this weekend , sunny mid 20's so I took the new Tammy out for a test run . The squirrels were out of luck for a free meal ! Hate to keep bugging the Forum about this lens but when you shell out 800 large this is the place to go for info on your lens. My observations .
1. f 5.6 seems to be the sweet spot
2. f 2.8 appears to be a bit soft in some situations
3. Auto focus hunts , when going from minimum focus to an object farther away the lens has a hard time finding the target . Anyone else have this happen with the
K-30 ?

In my experience, the lens is fantastically sharp at F2.8 from 70-150mm. 150-200mm, especially 200mm can be a bit softer - partly also because the hood is designed for the wider end than the long end. The focus on mine is a bit dodgy as well, but I compensate in the shorter focal lengths by zooming in and focusing, then zooming back out because the lens is parfocal.

Thanks . I noticed the softness at 200 as well . The focus hunt is kind of annoying but I could open up the zoom and see if that helps .

A simple query: have you the latest firmware update? Pentax released a couple of firmware updates for the K-30 incl. improve stability and optimised contrast AF.

My 5 cents.....

To be fair, it's still very useful at 200mm and F2.8. In fact, by F4 it's pretty much good. Most of the "softness" I've noticed is blooming edges, which I attribute to the inability for the hood to cover that focal length. I've had shots at 200mm and F2.8 where it's very good and sharp, because there isn't much stray light besides my subject.

When mine goes from short to telephoto distance it sometimes takes 1 or 2 attempts to nail the focus. You notice because the focus motor is fairly slow. That's why this lens is $800 and not $1200 though. It's no worse than my 55-300 either and I am more than willing to deal with it for the IQ.

Lovely and sharp shots!

Thanks Bullitt, my DAL 55-300 does the same some times . Just wondering if it was common . I dont mind some sacrifices for $800 as long as it is not a bad copy . Did you have to calibrate you copy ?

I notice the same behavior when going from minimum focus to something farther away. However, when it locks on it locks on as it should. I am more than happy with my copy, especially for the price I paid.

No adjustments on mine. It was prime-like sharp. From the photos above, I think your copy is doing great.

Thanks DSims and mikeSF . I guess there is a learning curve with this lens , shallow DF and focus performance need to be accounted for . mikeSF nice web site .
