Check this review - IMO it responds your questions. Anyway, your pics are excellent.

Just look through your photos. What is the camera subject distance?

It is not normal. If you click on my album of a test shot with Sigma 50f1.4 (Doraemon with dim light), you can see it is razor sharp at f1.4.

My copy came from bhphoto even though it was cheaper from DCW at the time.

Mine's a little soft at F1.4, but definitely sharp by F2.0. Even at 1.4, it depends on subject and situation. Your first shot is definitely too soft (and seemingly OOF).

If you're shooting with a K-5, make sure you update to the latest firmware. This will go some way to correct any focus errors caused by the camera. I ditched my K-5 because its AF accuracy was dodgy at close focusing distances. Happened with many different lenses. I don't have that problem anymore with my K-5IIs.

Early batches of the Sigma 50mm certainly showed focus errors with Canon and Nikon cameras as experienced by some of my Canikon using friends. They have had to send their lenses to Sigma for re-calibration. As to whether the issue crops up on K-mount is open to question. I tend to feel many of the issues of less than perfect sharpness tends to be with the accuracy of the camera's AF module.

I now have a K-5IIs with a recent copy of the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 and the combination delivers very, very sharp images even wide open at f/1.4. Central sharpness imo beats the DA*55mm f/1.4 that I had. Simply a terrific lens.

I find mine bloody hard to focus @ f1.4 - but when you hit that its great. At close distances, the DoF is razor thin! Suspect this may be part of the issue.

Look at the photozone test of the lens here :http://www.photozone.de/nikon_ff/616-sigma5014ff
It is a nikon test but the focus shift at large apertures is clearly visible, page 2, under the title "bokeh fringing", there is an animation when you move the mouse...
