Nice starburst. But that's the 21mm. I wonder how the 40 would have looked shooting the same pic.

LOL. If the sun shines tomorrow I will see what I can capture. Don't hold your breathe. Two days of sunshine in a row may be asking way too much in Kentucky for Feb.

I am using the DA40 (along with the 21 and 70) every day this month. I too will report back when the sun comes out (much more likely in Adelaide, South Australia at this time of year ).

This is the closest I've come to a starburst with the 40.

As a point of comparison, here are shots with the 15 vs 40 in the same place at the same time both at f14 to compare the starbursts:

The 40:

and the 15:

If starbursts are what you want, you need the 15 or 21. That said, I love the 40 maybe as much or more than my 15 for everything else.

Here are some starbursts with the Da40 limited. However, if you want starbursts, the da 15 is probably better.

Nice.....thanks for all of the comparisons. When you say you love the 40 for everything else; what do you mean? Is that pretty much your go to lens? The 15mm for wides only?

Here are some nice star bursts at f/16 with the DA 40mm. If I could only have one lens, and it was to be a DA limited, I would probably get the 40. Having the 43 now, it is less necessary (but I still picked up an XS again).

Actually the Star bursts look pretty nice in that photo.

I did some comparisons with the DA40 and DA21 today. The 40 needed to go to f/16 to produce a nice sharp starburst, while the DA21 had no trouble at f/11 with the same subject.
I also prefer the look of the 14 points rather than 18.

I deliberately went for subtlety here rather than pointing the lens straight at the sun. Look at the lid of the Weber kettle at full size.

I have never got a starburst from the DA40, but I have never tried. It is a wonderful lens for many other reasons.

Of those from which I have elicited starbursts:
DA10-17: six points and not that great. Too much flare as well.
DA15: unrivalled 14 point perfection.
DA*16-50: not bad, but uneven.
FA43: eight points. OK.
FA77: perfect starbursts, but 18 points is probably too many.
Agree, I have not seem a starburst better than DA15 yet.

My quest for today was to get a nice starburst effect.

The only prime lens available to me was the DFA 100 Macro WR. It has eight rounded blades. Luckily that rounding concerns only the aperture range F2.8 - F5.6. The starburst effect comes from much smaller apertures, with more diffraction, such as F16. The picture below was taken at F22.
