Your 28-70 seems to be a fair bit less sharp wide open than the Sigma 24-70 EX DG Macro that I recently sold. Mine was acceptable wide open and sharpened up significantly at f/3.2, so I used it almost exclusively in the f/3.2 to f/8 range. I also own the Pentax DA 16-50 and decided that I didn't need both. The Pentax is more resistant to flare and works better as an indoor lens for people in tight rooms, but I preferred the Sigma for people outdoors and in larger areas because of its extra reach. Long term my goal is to get a 50-135 or 50-150 to handle the long end the 16-50 doesn't cover.

These are the only shots I have online from the 24-70 right now: Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro - a set on Flickr

This is the only one at f/2.8 (downsized, probably sharpened a bit, and converted to black and white):

I'll take a look and see what else I have at f/2.8, but I expect that either Sigma 24-70 (EX DG Macro or the current HSM) would outperform your 28-70.

Thanks for the response and the example. I also checked out your flicker set with this lens. The studio shots looked great. would love to see some portratis at opened up at 2.8 if you have any.

Oh and I have the 50 - 135 and it's an amazing lens! You should definetly get one!

You might want to try borrowlenses.com and give the 16-50, or something else a try before you buy

If you already have the 50-135 then that might make the 16-50 or an equivalent Sigma or Tamron zoom a more practical choice since you have another fast lens available if you need more reach.

As I remembered I have very few shots from the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 wide open, but here's an unmodified JPEG from the same series of shots as the processed black and white image above. I was shooting Raw+ on my K10d that day so we could preview images on the studio monitor without having to process them:
