DA 50mm 1.8 or FA 50mm 1.7?

How does the new DA 50mm compare to the FA 50mm 1.7 wide open? I'm looking for a cheap AF 50mm with excellent sharpness wide open that I can use for low light concert photography. I love my DA* 55 for general portraits but it's a bit slow to focus and expensive to take into music crowds.

I'm not interested in manual focus and I have a couple of nice f2.8 zooms that I can use so this lens will be for when it's too dark to shoot at f2.8

I'm interested to hear opinions of those who've used these lenses (particularly both of them).

I own DA 50 1.8 and M 50 1.7 - i did a small test https://picasaweb.google.com/116520713575383586197/DA5018VsM5017?authuser=0&feat=directlink
Also some pics Pentax SMC DA 50/1.8 - a set on Flickr
For portrait it can be use from f2 without problem. Focus speed is fine and accurate with K5.

There is no cheap AF 50 with excellent sharpness wide open - you already have the only one (which is why it's not cheap) in the DA*55.

I had all of the AF 50's but the FA50/1.4 - the F50/1.4 and FA50/1.7 were better overall, with the F50/1.7 slightly behind. All need to be shot no faster than f/2 or f/2.2 (depending on the lens) for optimal IQ.

I haven't tried the DA50/1.8, so I can't speak for it. But if you can find a FA50/1.7 try it. If I had kept one, it would have been the F50/1.4. But when I got the FA43 it outdid all of them, so there was no point in keeping the 50's.

See lens review here

The DA50 f1.8 is less sharp than your DA55 at f2.0
The FA50 f1.7 is not tested but I guess it will be less sharp also
None of the lenses has excellent sharpness wide open

The F and FA 50 f1,7 are the same.

I find the f1,7 to be perfectly usable wide open, and stellar from f2 onward.

For music crowds and concert shots you don't really need super sharpness or anything like that. Just get a used FA 50mm f1.4 and a good hood for protection (maybe a rubber one for crowds). You will need the speed more than IQ. And AF will never be "fast" in dim light, but with the FA you have nice distance scales and can switch to MF to zone focus.

The last 3 of my first post and both in the second post are at f/1.7 or f/1.8. The first pic in my first post is f/2

Here's some very impressive samples of what the 50 1.8 can do. They're landscapes rather than concert I know, but still . . that lens acquits itself well. Kudo's of course to forum member Colorado CJ.

I think I have slightly different standards (which is a shame, because it makes it rather expensive for me) but all of the AF50's are only beginning to get good at f/2 - far from "stellar."

I'm not sure what you mean by "the F and FA f/1.7 are the same," other than the formulas being identical on paper. In practice the images come out looking different. In fact, the images from each generation have a slightly different look (although F and A glass can look quite similar). I believe I had a good copy of each lens (F50/1.4, FA50/1.7, and F50/1.7) and my conclusions happened to agree with what many others have found before me (but even if they didn't agree, I'd still state what I found).

The FA 50/1.7 is excellent wide open, at least as good as the A & M versions. I have read that the DA 50 is not so good, it also costs more and is more plasticky. One review I read stated that the AF works extremely badly.

I tried the DA 50 on the K5 II yesterday and it handled very well. AF was quick and accurate from what I could see on the LCD. Was surprised how well built it felt for an all plastic lens. Can't comment on IQ as was only viewing on the LCD.

It was my choice before deciding to go for the DA 55 or FA 43.

Yes, all Pentax screw drive lenses are noisy.
