Sigma 17-70mm curiousity

Just wondering if anyone has one of these and would like to coment on its performance.

Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens.

If they are good I might consider it a near future purchase.

Wow, those are large letters!

I suggest you read both the user reviews here in the database, and the extensive review that compares it to the first version of the lens, and the Pentax 17-70.

I just bought the non-OS HSM version (=version 1) and love it. I deliberately made the decision to get this version instead of the OS HSM version, based on my interpretation of info I found online on both lenses.

I agree wholeheartedly with PBandJ! And not just because I have one for sale in the marketplace.. *looks left and right with shifty eyes*

I have a 17-70 F2.8-4 HSM. Do you have any lenses that I may perhaps know, and can give you some comparison information?

I have the non HSM version. Hardly ever leaves my K5, except when the weather is real bad or I anticipate needing more reach.
(Glad to see others saying it's better than the newer version.)

I own the first version the 17-70mm 2.8 -4.5. The biggest reason I like it is the "macro" capabilities...not a true macro, but it can focus in up to the point where the lens shadows the subject. I believe that the new version can't get as close.
Good luck with your decision

I also have the previous version- its my most used lens such a great zoom range. The HSM would make it even better (fast/quieter although has never bothered me on those two factors).
I really don't know if the OS is worth paying extra for unless you are shooting alot of tight portraits in low light conditions.

My copy has a hard time locking focus between 50-70mm on my K5. It doesn't focus at all on my new K-01. The photos are quite sharp and lovely otherwise.

I wonder how you can investigate that? I have the version 1 on my K01 and it's a perfect match.

Mine is my most used lens, too. Nothing beats its versatility.

I wrote the comaprative review and foud that the v1 was a tiny tiny bit sharper than the v2. HSM was a nice bonus but the v2 is larger, and the in-lens OS drains the batteries quite fast, with Pentax's SR it's not really needed.

With Pentax it's not worth it at all, except if you really need your viewfinder view to be stabilized. And with a relatively wide lens, it's not much of an issue. With a long tele it could be different, a stabilized view could be useful.

With EVERY shot I try on the K01, I get exactly 3 clicks of the HSM motor and then it stops.
