Just a little followup to this story... the vendor replaced the lens, and the replacement seems to work perfectly.

The vendor was Cameta Camera in New York, and based on this experience, I can certainly recommend them.

Now that the flare issue has been resolved, I can also tell you that I'm thrilled with the Sigma 18-50mm. It will become my workhorse lens from this point forward.

I have the new Macro version of this lens and I absoluetly love it!

It is my main lens and spends the most time on my camera....

I am still learning how to use it to the fullest but I really feel this was a good choice for me as a main lens.
