100 - 150mm Value Lens for Infinity Shots

Hello,

I have primes up to 70mm but am interested in getting a lens to replace my Tamron 70-300 zoom. I don't need longer than 200 and ideally would get a zoom focused at 100-150mm. Alternatively a prime could also work.

The biggest thing I need is resolution at infinity. I can/will be shooting at f/8; my Tamron just doesnt' look great on my K01. So, I can either grab a 135 or 200mm prime for under $200 or sell/trade my DA70 for a 70-200. What do you think?

My biggest thing is a sharp lens at infinity while in the f/5.6 - f/8 zone. I would like a lens with an "A" setting. It doesn't have to be autofocus. For my budget, maybe it shouldn't be.

Edit: to be clear, I'm most interested in thoughts about older lenses with the A setting that are cheaper and not autofocus. If there isn't one that's going to be clearly better than my Tamron, then at that point I'd be looking at the 50-135 Pentax or Tamron 70-200, Sigma, etc.

An A135 sounds like it might be right for you.

That's an interesting problem. Going out on a limb, I'll suggest the SMC Pentax-F 70-210mm f4-5.6. It's f4 from 70-110mm, f4.5 from 110mm to 170mm, so you'd be a little stopped down. The lens is pretty sharp all over, 9 blade aperture like a Limited prime, ugly F series package, pretty loud in focusing. Since it's an F series zoom, it communicates focal length to the camera, a real bonus over an A series zoom.

A cheap solution is the Pentax-M 135/3.5, maybe a little annoying but only like $50 for excellent performance.

The F70-210/4-5.6 is a very good lens, and is quite affordable - especially in Takumar trim. It's the reason I wasn't interested in the DA*60-250 when I tried one - the DA* just wasn't that much better - especially if you don't need the speed or longer end of the DA*. If you want to move up you need to go to the DA*50-135, or a prime like the F/FA135, K200/2.5 or one of the *200/2.8s. The A135/2.8 isn't as strong as the AF 135s, but it's still pretty good (I had one).

I think the A70-210 or the somewhat similar Vivitar model are candidates too, although I haven't owned either of them.

As Just1MoreDave alluded to (by the sudden change from f/4.5 to f/5.6 between 170-210mm) the F70-210 is a little weak above 180mm or so, but apparently you don't need that range (neither did I). Also, I think the M135/3.5 was the first prime I ever bought. Perhaps I had a bad copy, or my inexperience at the time got the best of me, but I was very unimpressed with the overall IQ, and notably the poor resolution at infinity. When I got the A135/2.8 and compared them I quickly sold the M135/3.5.

I'll put two links here, just to emphesise the question. Define value for me, because the total of the two lenses here is $25

Older primes in the 100-200 mm range are inexpensive and generally excellent in quality. Lens designs are simple in this FL range,

Another option is something like a vivitar series 1 70-200. There are several versions, the first, constant aperture F3.5 is one of the best

I really like my rikenon 70-150 f:4 though I never explicitly scrutinized it at infinity before. Internal zoom so it stays compact. Pentax has a similar 75-150 in the m series but the push pull zoom type. A 150 or 135 prime might also be suitable. And of course a 55-300 is nice below 200mm plus allows more options!

Valuewise, I can spend up to $100, no problem. I'd spend up to $200 if there was something that was the right lens. I'd be willing to sell my 70 ($300) and add $300 for a nice zoom lens; $600 total. However, I'd prefer not to as I enjoy my 70. I'd like something for 60, 80, $100. But if there's something way better for $199, that's what I'm asking about. I do want the A setting though.

How good is the F 70-210? Especially compared to the Tamron. The Tamron I find to be a great value lens. And, its particularly good up close. But long range its just not sharp enough, even at f8. It's better at shorter distances. I really need the lens to be dialed in around 120mm. But it'd be nice to get to 100mm and 175mm too. The Vivitar may fit the bill, but does it have the A setting? How much do those sell for? How does it compare to the Pentax F and Tamron that I already own?

Look at the images and you tell me:

PENTAX : Select a PENTAX interchangeable lens camera or a lens model

It's good on an absolute basis, and even better if you consider the cost. It's one of 3 over-performing F/FA kit lenses I really like and still own.

I think it's OK to sell the DA70 toward the purchase of a used DA*50-135, because you'll still retain so much of the IQ in the trade (good thing you didn't say you had an FA77 - that would make the decision much harder). It might be worth selling it toward the Tamron 70-200/2.8 too, but there would be a more noticeable difference in the images, which may or may not be OK with you.
