DA* 55: smaller lens hood feasible?

I am testing out the DA* 55 1.4 lens to see if its a keeper. The lens hood is just a little too big for my taste. Is there a smaller lens hood that would be feasible for this lens?

If you go on Ebay and type in "58mm lens hood", you'll get all sort of different shaped and sized hoods, some plastic and some metal.

I personally used a small metal hood that I found on Ebay, I really liked that one.

The thing that would concern me is the size of the hood should be the result of the engineering to be the proper size for the lens. I don't know enough myself to second guess those folks.

A valid concern since the factory hood takes into account the front element recess. That being said, a smaller hood is quite possible, though perhaps not as affective for APS-C. The trick is to provide as much shielding as possible without vignette. I routinely use a hood designed for short tele on my fast 50s when shooting on the K10D and switch to a shorter hood when shooting film. I could (and have) used the shorter hood on the K10D, but seldom have a reason to do so.

I agree with that. I also agree that the hood for the DA*55 is big - just about doubles the size of the lens!

I use the B+W 58mm normal hood and it's the perfect fit for the DA* 55mm; it matches the diameter of the lens barrel as if it was made for the lens while keeping the size nice and small.

On a side note, I recently lost my original massive DA* 55mm lens hood. Would you be interested is selling your hood?

thanks everyone. I am looking at the lens hoods on ebay. I will probably try the collapsible ones.
